Coaches Matt Lloyd and Zach Hertzenberg teamed up to lead the
2017-18 Freshmen Mustangs to a 13-9 record.  The team finished
with a NKAC Division II record of 4-3, did not lose to a NKAC
Div-III foe (3-0), posted a 6-5 record while playing at
home and a 7-4 mark while on the road.  They owned a 2-1 mark
versus 37th District competition, while earning the district's top
tournament seed.  They sported a 4-2 record versus teams from
the 10th Region and an Independent teams record of 5-4.

Stephen Verst was far and away the team's leader, scoring 296
points on the year, while averaging 14.1ppg.  He also led the team
in field goals from beyond the arc with 36.  Gabe Smorey knocked
home 32 3-pointers in six fewer games.  Stephen shot 75% from
the free-throw line (70-94).  Trevor Schadler led the team in that
category, hitting on 38 of 48 attempts for a 79% average.  As a
team they shot 64% from the stripe (184-287) and outscored their
opponents by a 41 to 39 points margin.  Verst (296), Smorey (130),
Mick Clines (128), and Schadler (124) all scored over 100 Points.

They defeated rival NCC 44-26 and split with Campbell County,
defeating the Camels 43-39 in a district seeding contest, and then
being defeated in the District Championship game 44-35.

The team scored quality wins over Beechwod, Scott, Campbell County, Holmes and Walton-Verona.  Perhaps
their most notable contest was a loss to Highlands in Fort Thomas 55-52.  In this game our Mustangs fell behind
twice by sizable margins, but battled back on both occasions.  Highlands went on to become the NoKyFreshmen
Tournament runners-up.
Stephen Verst doubled up with the JV team when available where he has scored 45 points in nine games.
The freshmen team played without the services of Carson Schirmer who played strictly JV and Varsity ball
during the 2017-18 season, where he has emerged as a varsity co-starter with Junior Bryan Duffy.
