This loss on January 21st, 1955 must surely be our
most decisive in the history of our program.
Schabell, who more recently has been known as the "Voice of the Mustangs", having begun broadcasting
our games over the internet since 2002, would also like to be remembered as a coach.
He was hired in 1979 by then head coach Jon Quatman to serve as the boys freshman team coach.  He
served in that capacity through the 1985-86 season when he became the Girls Varsity head coach, a
position he held for five seasons, amassing 99 wins during that stint  (99-45).  Holding down a full-time
position with Procter and Gamble, he was forced to give up the Girls Head Coaching job, when the
KHSAA conducted a crackdown on para-professional head coaches in 1991, after which he returned to
coaching Freshman boys off and on, as needed through the decade of the 90s.
Schabs was instrumental in bringing Willie Schlarman to Brossart in 1997, making an arrangement with
him where he would perform all of the administrative duties freeing up Willie to simply coach the team.
This is the same arrangement that he has with present Head Coach Mike Code.  It has been a successful
formula for the past twenty-three years.  During his tenure at Brossart, Schabs has served under seven
different head coaches.
