All Sophomore Mustang JVs Finish Season On An 8-2 Run
Overcome a 1-6 Start, Finish With a Winning 9-8 Record
Sees Sam Willike Perform A Dramatic Turnaround To Become Leading Scorer
Coach Daniel Schultz was presented with an
all-sophomore JV roster for the 2020-21 Covid Campaign,
and it showed early in the season as the team managed
only one victory in our first seven outings.A mid-season
turnaround beginning on February 18th at Bourbon
County would see this team win eight of their next ten
games, with one of those losses being in overtime to Holy
Cross, giving them a season record of 9-8.
Sam Willike and Evan Orth managed to score over 100
points to lead the team in that category at 8.3 and 7.3
points per game respectively.
Luke Schumacher, expected to be one of this team's top
players re-injured his knee in only his second game of
competition, after having rehabbed the knee from an
injury sustained at an early season practice.  He has
since had it operated on and expects to make a full recovery for the 2021-22 season.
A year ago, Sam Willike would have probably been voted one of the sophomores least likely to have
his picture exhibited on the JV post-season summary page.  Coming off of a freshman season where
he scored a total of 35 points in 22 games, averaging less than four points per contest, Sam, along
with growing about three inches taller over the summer, made a phenomenal step forward in
confidence and ability, to become this team's leading scorer.  Sam has popularized the rain-maker
three-pointer, where he landed 15 of them in JV competition and a few more in varsity action.
Robbie Verst, a sophomore who did not play a game his freshman year due to a lower back stress
fracture, was expected to break in with the JVs this season.  He too sustained an injury, breaking
his foot during independent workouts during the KHSAA practice shutdown in December.  When he
did play in a JV game against Highlands, he scored 7 points in the first half, before spraining an
ankle.  He then played straight varsity when he recovered.  Another sophomore, Mason Sepate,
played only on the varsity team.
A lot is expected from this group in 2021-22 when they join David Govan, who will be a senior, and
re-unite as a complete junior unit.
