Our string of perfect football weather Friday nights came to an end in Brooksville as a slow moving band of storms caused a delayed start to the game, following by a forty-one minute lightning delay at the end of the first quarter.  These were some of the toughest broadcast conditions that I have ever worked in – narrow windows, ill-positioned scoreboard, lightly marked yard lines and steamy windows made this one a major challenge, as you could probably tell..

Between the delayed start and the lightening delay, our Mustangs scored on three consecutive offensive opportunities, delivering an early game knockout punch as we led 21-0 after a quarter of play.

A big third down and long pass play to Derek Martin set up our first score, as Jed Martin put us on the board with a 46 yard run with only 2:08 expired in the first quarter.   On Bracken County’s first play from scrimmage, Payton Tully spit up the football, recovered by Jacob Leicht, who would orchestrate a 36 yard drive and give it to the Big Dawg, David Govan – Woof, Woof!!!,, who finished off the final seven yards to give the Mustangs the lead at 14-0 when Leicht bootlegged home the two-point conversion.  On the ensuing possession, Bracken County found themselves at fourth-and-one at their own 46 yard line, electing to go for the first-down.  However, the Mustangs read it out stood up Tully, and stopped him short of the first-down, setting up Leicht and company with a short field, which Jacob negotiated at his first opportunity, and with 5:23 to play in the first quarter, this one had the makings of a blow-out.  It was at this point where we encountered the lightning delay.

When play resumed neither team was able to do serious damage for the remaining 17:23 of the first half, that ended with the Mustangs in control, but slightly out of synch, at 21-0.

Jed scores early, goes on a 46 yard touchdown run
David Govan goes 7 yards for our second touchdown
Jacob Leicht scored two TDs and a two-point conversion

In the third quarter our guys regained their swagger, tacking on another score, after forcing  the Polar Bears to go three and out on their first possession.  This one came on a 57 yard drive that Evan Orth finished off with a ten yard carry, and Jed Martin added on the two-point conversion – 29-0 Mustangs.

Jacob Leicht send this game to a running clock with 9:02 remaining in the contest, scoring his second touchdown of the night raising his season points total to 72, putting up 14 on the night.  Andrew Schwartz knocked home one of two PATs under tough kicking conditions.

In all honesty, the scoreboard was a bit unfair to the Bracken County Polar Bears, who hit as hard as any team we have played to date.  Credit our defense for notching their fifth shutout of the season, and maintaining our Number One defensive status in all of Class 1A.

In other action on Friday night Nicholas County handed Paris their second district seeding loss, and remain one game behind the Mustangs in that race.  We will conclude district play next Friday night at Paris, with a chance to extend our win streak to nine, and earn that second home playoff game.

For their cumulative efforts this season on both sides of the ball and for making major contributions again tonight, Evan Orth (left) and David Govan (right) are our two Snappy Tomato Players of the Week

I will be fishing at Pickwick Lake for the remainder of the week, returning in time for the Paris game next Friday night.  Therefore there will be no further updates to this thread.
