It is an old, overused, but true adage, that each team in each class will finish their season with a loss, with the exception of the State Champion, and we are not quite ready for that stage – yet!

Jacob Leicht was sacked on eight occasions, demonstrating just how overpowering the Raceland defense was. Logan Lundy was as billed. A gifted passer, operating our of a multi-faceted quick-strike offense.
We had hoped for better, and we certainly deserved better, but our old basketball coach Willie Schlarman, used to say, “It ain’t about deserving.”
Raceland delivered the proverbial “punch in the mouth” early and often, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter, opening up what would be an insurmountable 19-0 lead.
The second quarter was much more Mustang-like as Jacob Leicht orchestrated a 64 yard drive, and connected with a wide open Jed Martin on a 7 yard aerial, putting six points on the board and a 19-7 deficit when Andrew “Dewey” Schwarz split the uprights for the 23rd time this season.
The Mustangs not only scored the touchdown, but embarrassed the Rams on the ensuing kick-off, rushing to the ball, catching the Rams napping, and recovered the onsides kick, and suddenly the Mustangs threatened to further narrow the gap, and once again make it a ballgame. Leicht would once again march us from the Brossart 44 to the Raceland 24 yard line before being forced to turn the ball over to the Rams on downs.
It was hoped that the Mustangs would be able to prevent further damage prior to halftime, but were unsuccessful as Noah Wallace carried the piggy 30 yards for a Rams score with merely 43 seconds remaining in the half. With 21 seconds remaining in the half, a long gainer pass completion to Sam Willike, had us at the Raceland 20, but an enusing sack of Leicht thwarted an eleventh hour momentum score for our guys.
The Rams would improve their situation with another touchdown in the third quarter, sealing our fate, now trailing 34-7. The Rams sent it to a running clock with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter at the 6:47 mark and the 5:38 mark.
I had the privilege of riding the charter bus along with the football team, and got to witness first hand how beat up our football team is. Mason Meyer sustained an injury which curtailed his punting duties early in the second half, and Thomas Sayers could barely climb the steps and make his way to his seat. It was a quiet ride back to Alexandria, mostly because this was one exhausted football team.
My wish for them is that they will remember their multitude of accomplishments this season, and not allow a single loss to a superior football team on this night to diminish those accomplishments. There was also a lot of pain in the realization that the high school careers of 11 seniors had come to a conclusion. I’m happy to see the end of a season and career hurt a little it, because it speaks volumes about what football, this season, and their careers here meant to them.
