Our Mustang JVs shut out the visiting Villa Vikings 16-0 in the first half, en-route to a 31-15 opening night victory.

No Mustang hit double-figures, but six players put ink in the scorebook, led by Luke Schumacher with 9 points.  Ryan Williamson contributed 6, Ryan Keller 5, Sam Willike and Luke Piscitello 4, and Freshman Keegan Gulley added 3 free-throws.

The Mustang JVs will be back in action Wednesday night, taking on the Newport Wildcats at Stan Arnzen Gym at 6pm.

Junior Luke Schumacher only played two games a year ago before undergoing knee surgery. He was provided lots of minutes last night in both the JV and the Varsity games.

Trip over the track?  Yes.  A Ken Shields Picasso?  No.  Such was the game report on our opening night outing with the Villa Madonna Vikings.  The two teams exchanged baskets early on, but with the Mustangs on top 5-4 the home team went on an 11-0 run, drawing a Vikings time-out, and we were never seriously threatened thereafter.

The Mustangs won the first quarter 16-6 behind the sharp-shooting of Junior Mason Sepate, who drained a pair of 3-pointers and completed a 3 point play, the old fashion way.  We would dominate the second stanza, outscoring the visitors 17-9 as David Govan made his presence known with a trio of field-goals, and Logan Woosley caught fire, nailing back-to-back 3s and one of two from the free-throw line.  The Mustangs led 33-15 at intermission.

In the third period, Evan Orth came from off of the bench and scored three buckets as we edged the Vikings 12-10 to expand the lead to 45-25, and finished it off with a 15-12 fourth quarter advantage putting this one in the record books as a 60-37 Brossart Victory.

For the game the Mustangs shot 63% from 2-Point range, 42.9% from beyond the arc, and 56% from the free-throw line.  Junior Jack Poe came off the bench and gave the Mustangs some quality minutes, leading the team with 6 steals. Coach Scott Code will have ample things to work on at practice, and often the offense was not cohesive, which is understandable, and we turned the ball over on 16 occasions.

The Mustangs will travel to Newport on Wednesday for JV and Varsity games at 6pm and 7:30pm in NKAC DivisionII competition.  The live (audio) broadcast will air at 7:10pm.
