Mustangs Limit Holmes Bulldogs To 21 Points Below Their Average, but can muster merely 39 ourselves in low scoring slugfest.

Mustangs offense goes MIA in 43-39 Monday night NKAC DivII loss to Holmes.

At the onset of the game, our Mustangs ran out to a quick 10-3 lead, drawing a Holmes time out, and all appeared well with the world.  Out of the timeout, the Bulldogs embarked on a 9-0 run to take a 12-10 lead, which they would not relinquish until merely 2:50 remained in the game, when we were able to knot the score at 35s.  We would battle to a 39-39 tie with 48 ticks remaining.  The Bulldogs had hit a major 3 point goal with the score tied and their free-throws down the stretch to hold off our guys and win the conference game.43-39.

Holding the Bulldogs, who average 64 points a game to 43 is an accomplishment, one that is normally rewarded with a win and a ball on the locker room wall – but not on this night as we simply failed to be able to manufacture points against the superior athleticism of Holmes.  Mason Sepate did his best in the first have hitting a “3”  en-route to a 10 point half, but no other Mustang would exceed three points in the half.

The Mustangs utilized David Govan’s size in the second half, as the Big Dawg produced 10 points, which wouldn’t be enough to overcome the Bulldogs on this night.  Reclassified senior Quantez Calloway led all scorers with 27 points.  With the loss, the Mustangs fall to 6-9, and will now focus our attentions on winning the 10th Region “A” Classic and earning a berth in the “A” State Tournament later this month.   The 10th Region “A” gets underway Saturday afternoon at 2pm when we take on Nicholas County at Bracken County High School..

The Brossart JV team improves to 5-4 on the season with a 34-24 win over the JV Bulldogs.  Anthony Kruse led the Mustangs with 13 points.  Jordan Bailey led the Dawgs with 13 as well.
