Our Mustangs took on the unenviable task of win or face Campbell County in the opening round of the upcoming 37th District Tournament as they invaded Alumni Gymnasium at Calvary Christian High School.  We were attempting to bust out of a five game setbacks streak.

Our guys fully realized the implication and came to play, playing intense defense, while outscoring the Cougars 12-7 in the first period, and led 22-16 at the half.  We had actually led by 12 at 22-10 prior to the Cougars going on a 6-0 run to finish out the half, on the merits of a trio of Ethan Mulling 3-pointers, the only points they put on the board in the second period.   Brossart’s 22 points in the half were comprised of a pair of Brandon Bezold 3s, a 3 and a 2 from Mason Sepate, three 2s from Govan and 2 pointers from Luke Schumacher and Anthony Kruse, who reaped havoc on the Cougars on the defensive side of the ball.

Senior, David Govan: 12pts/10 rebounds
Junior, Luke Schumacher: 12pts/10 rebounds

Dave Govan and Luke Schumacher teamed up for 24 points and 20 rebounds.  Schumacher took a pair of charges.  Govan and Schumacher have been playing well as a tandem over our last few games.

After battling to a 26-22 advantage shortly into the second half, the Mustangs unleased an 8-0 run, giving us a 12 point cushion, which would remain 12 at 38-26 at the conclusion of the third quarter. During that stanza, it was Mason Sepate who led the offensive charge with 8 points.  Midway through the fourth quarter we would push the advantage to 17 at 48-31, and were not seriously challenged as we recorded the 52-40 victory.  The Calvary Cougars started five seniors and were led by Ethan Mulling with 17 points.  The Thomas More signee, nailed three 3,s a 2 pointer and was perfect from the line at 6 of 6.

Anthony Kruse was tenacious reaping havoc on the Cougar ball-handlers.

Luke Ruwe also notched double-figures with 12.  Brossart had a total of five players score.  Mason Sepate put up 15, Schumacher and Govan with 12, Brandon Bezold 8, and Anthony Kruse 7,  Both teams hit 7 free-throws.  The Mustangs were 7 of 11 and the Cougars 7 of 9.

Our JVs were winners 30-12.  They were led by Evan Orth (8) and Luke Piscitello (9) who combined for 17 of our 30 points.

Luke Schumacher was outstanding, as he continues to outplay our expectations of him, coming off of a season where he underwent knee surgery and only played two varsity games.

The Mustangs played without the services of Sam Willike and Logan Woosley.  We will welcome Boone County to the SyDome Wednesday night, be on the bus to the Mason County Fieldhouse for a bout with the region’s second ranked Mason County Royals on Thursday, and host Lewis County Saturday which has been designated Senior Night – that is a 5pm varsity game start .
