The Tag-team of Govan and Schumacher Click for 39 Points and 18 Rebounds. Govan 13 of 15 From the Field.
Early in the season Ryle defeated Harrison County by hitting sixteen 3-point goals. Early on Tuesday night in the SyDome Ryle hit their first three long-ball attempts, opening a quick 9-0 lead and I was beginning to wonder if we might be in for a repeat of that performance. Ryle pushed the lead to 13-4 before the Mustangs became the aggressors, discovering that the Raiders had no answer for David Govan, who would spearhead runs of 7-0 and 11-0 catching and passing the visitors at 18-17, which would be the only lead change in the game. Govan feasted on feeds from the perimeter amassing 20 first half tallies, and would connect on 13 of 15 shots from the field, in addition to grabbing 9 rebounds in the night.
This was actually a contentious game, with the Mustangs holding a single point edge at 42-41 with 5:20 remaining in the game and again at 44-43 with 2:20 left. I was beginning to have flashbacks of the seven losses within four points that we had sustained thus far this season. However, hitting 9 of 10 free-throws down the stretch allowed us to draw off to the 13 point win. There were some big plays late including a huge Sam Willike 3-pointer and a backdoor lob to Mason Sepate who scored 9 on the night..
With his 31 points scored vs Ryle, David Govan moved into the #30 spot on our all-time scorers list with 836 career points, passing Stephen Verst who scored 830. FULL CAREER SCORING LIST
A fairly obvious intentional foul late in the game also resulted in a technical foul, which paved the way for the Mustangs to draw off in posting our 10th win of the season.
Anthony Kruse dealt out five assists, and Schumacher 4. Both Schumacher and Govan pulled down 9 rebounds each. We hit a total of 16 of 24 free throws, for a 12 point edge over the now 11-19 Raiders.
The Mustangs remain at home on Wednesday night when we close out our 2022 home schedule by hosting the Bourbon County Colonels. JV and Varsity games at 6pm and 7:30pm.
