Our Mustangs took our final major prep before opening the regular season next Friday night at Dayton, traveling to Sayre for a formal three 12-minute period varsity scrimmage, followed by rotating series of possessions by the JV team.
The Spartans moved the ball effectively in the first period, but a Brossart interception prevented them from scoring. They did manage to put 7 points on the board early in the second period on a 10 yard pass play from their Sophomore Quarterback Luke Pennington. The Mustangs took possession at our own 20 yard line, and as we saw over and again in 2021, drove the football 80 yards under the direction of our Sophomore QB, Keegan Gulley, for a Mustangs touchdown that was culminated by an Evan Orth run into the end zone. We threatened once more just before the half, but the clock was the winner and after two periods of varsity scrimmage, we ere knotted at 7-7.
The third period saw Sam Willike pick his second interception of the night, advancing the ball to the Sayre 7 yard line, where a few plays later, again Evan Orth put six more points on the Brossart side of the scoreboard. The PAT missed and the final varsity scrimmage score would favor the green-clads 13-7
The JVs took over in the next session. The scoreboard was turned off and the yards and downs markers were retired for the night. On their first possession, again Sayre threatened, but again the Mustang defense was up to the task. Gritty Brossart Sophomore Tyler Holtz marched the piggy about 40 yards and a completion to Landon Ruth for the touchdown, put the icing on the cake and sent our Mustangs back to Alexandria feeling pretty good about the outing in Lexington.
