BBHS VS CALVARY – PREGAME REPORT

Just about the last place on earth the winless Calvary Christian Cougars would like to be this Monday evening is in Alexandria to play our Brossart Mustangs, who are stinging off of back-to-back losses to Beechwood and Harrison County.

God love Cougars Coach, Orlando Donaldson, who has worked miracles with his Cougars in our facility in the past, for sticking with this group of youngsters on a roster depleted by graduation, where he lost nine seniors who accounted for 54 of his team’s 54.6 scoring average a year ago, on a team that went 20-11 and defeated Scott in a district seeding match.  Do the math – the Cougars return .6ppg from last year’s team.  Not 6 points, but .6.  So far this year, Donaldson’s rebuilding Cougars, with one senior on the roster, have taken a 37 point loss to Bellevue and a 54 point setback to Scott, along with four other sizable losses to sundry Christian schools.  The Cougars are required to play us.  As members of the KHSAA, they are assigned to the 37th District, which is a seeded district.

Before weeping too profusely for the Cougars, you might consider that they have defeated us twice in the past four seasons in district seeding games, and took us overtime in the 2020 10th Region “A” Tournament semi-finals which we then won and went on to cut down th nets in the finals.  We have won all 22 of our remaining contests with the Cougars in modern history.

This game is the finale of a tripleheader, which I show the Freshman Game slated for 5pm, the JVs to follow at about 6pm and the main event tipping off at 7:30pm.  We will welcome in some of our Junior High students from St. Mary and Sts. Peter and Paul.

Game Report

The Calvary Cougars had few answers to the Mustangs pressure, as we built a 25-5 first quarter advantage. to the delight of the St. Mary and Sts. Peter and Paul grade schoolers in attendance as guests of Coach Ben Franzen and the Mustangs.  The lid that was firmly affixed this past Friday night came off of the hoop as we drained four three-pointers, two each by Logan Woosley and Mason Sepate, in the opening stanza.  .Both would add a third in the second period, joined by Brandon Bezold, contributing to the home team’s halftime lead of 45-13.  Coach Franzen liberally exercised his bench in the second half as the game was played in running clock mode.  Ten of the thirteen Mustangs dressed scored in the game.   We were led in scoring by Mason Sepate with 17.  Logan Woosley put up 16 and our third double figure scorer, Sophomore Alex Combs, notched his first career double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.  Calvary’s Race Zachary led the Cougars with 14.  Our Seniors head off to retreat on Tuesday and be back in time for practice on Thursday in preparation for our Crosstown Classic bout with Campbell County on Friday.
