Pineville Mountain, which serves as the backdrop at Bill Adams Stadium in Pineville, has been watching football played at this venue since 1922. Saturday night it added another page to its volumes of Pineville football history when the Brossart Mustangs took the field and were added to the long litany of opponents who have taken the grand mountain stage to take on the Pineville Mountain Lions for the first time.
The Mustangs won the toss and elected to receive. We would take possession on the 35 yard line and despite marching the football inside the Pineville 30, the drive stalled out. Our defense was sterling forcing a three and out, and on our second chance we would fare better, finishing the drive on this occasion when Tyler Holtz plunged the requisite one yard giving the Mustangs a 6-0 lead. On the PAT attempt a Pineville flag moved the piggy to the 1 1/2 yard line, and Cam Mandel made easy work of the 2-Point conversion. With 3:23 remaining in the first period, our guys were up 8-0. Pineville’s second offensive possession went equally for naught when Freshman Quinten Tischner intercepted a Deacon Partin pass, and the Mustangs were back on offense. The Lions returned the interception favor picking off a Keegan Gulley pass and taking it 69 yards for a Pineville touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good and we had a two point lead nearing halftime. It was then that the Mustangs would put together a 98 yard scoring drive and with 1:52 left in the half, Cam Mandel ran 16 yards for his first of four touchdown on the night. Pineville answered with just 12 seconds to go, on a questionable pass completion from Sawyer Thompson to Wyatt Caldwell, and it was again a two point game 14-12, Mustangs, at the half.
Late in the third quarter, momentum climbed into a Pineville uniform when Landon Robbins went 69 yard up the sidelines giving the Lions their first lead of the game, and that quickly we found ourselves trailing 18-16. Those were the last points the home team put on the scoreboard. Brossart went on a 20-0 run behind three consecutive trophy runs by the shifty Junior workhorse, Mandel, and our defense did the rest as we drew off to a 36-18 win, doubling it up on the homestanding Mountain Lions, making our first trip to the Pineville Mountains and the Cumberland Gap a memorable one.
OUR PLAYERS OF THE GAME ARE CAM MANDEL AND NATE HECK.
THIS WAS ACTUALLY A BOWL GAME (LAUREL BOWL) IN WHICH CAM MANDEL (2) AND JOE SCHROEDER (56) WERE SELECTED AS PLAYERS OF THE GAME, AND OUR MUSTANGS BROUGHT HOME A LOMBARDIESQUE SILVER TROPHY.
