Boys Soccer Finds Their Groove

This Team Is Fun To Watch!

From the moment they step onto the pitch, it’s clear that this team is just that…a team.  While several players have recorded a multi-goal game this season, including three hat tricks, their passing is what has contributed to the team’s unselfish success. That unselfishness has amounted to an equal number of goals (57, 4.1/game) and assists (57, 4.1/game), as of 9/9/23.

Although the season didn’t start as expected, with 2 ties against Dixie and Conner, both games could have easily fallen into the win column. This team took those ties as an opportunity to improve.  Since then, the boys have tallied 9 wins, 2 losses (Dunbar and Ryle) and 1 tie (GRC)…scoring 56 goals, while holding opponents to 14.  These 7 players have racked up 52 of our 57 season goals.  Not to mention, the same group has 48 of our 57 assists.

DEFENSE: Senior goalkeeper Michael Cooney and the senior-led defense have contributed to 6 clean sheets in our 14 games. Senior center-backs, Carter Goodman and Ryan Clines continue to lock down the back line by playing nearly every minute of every game. Seniors Tyler Braun, Max Keller, and Austin Oergel, along with juniors Andrew Lusby & Austin Twehues not only help defend, but also contribute to our offensive success.

MIDFIELD/OFFENSE: Senior Tyler Smith, junior Alex Runge and sophomores Max Runge & Sam Chirumbolo continue to dominate by winning the 50/50 battle and have all scored multiple goals.  They also dish out beautiful passes to three of the fastest guys in the district.  Seniors Landon Guidugli and Brennen Callahan, along with junior Luke Alwell seem to have another gear when it comes to outrunning the defense on their way to the goal.

UNDERCLASSMEN: The ability to put some teams away early has given head coach Ron Dunlevy the ability to look down his bench and give some valuable minutes to several of our sophomore and freshman players.  These guys continue to impress at the JV level and understand their assignment when it’s time to compete in a Varsity game.  Logging minutes at a more physical and faster game speed will be crucial next season when they fill the shoes of this year’s 10 seniors.

Whether it’s their crisp passing, lightning-fast counterattacks, or tactical defense, there’s never a dull moment when this team takes the field.  Do yourself a favor and support this team by packing the MAC during home games and any game that you’re able to attend.  Your next opportunity is Tuesday, when the Mustangs travel 7 minutes south to take on 37th District rival: the Campbell County Camels.

Senior night will take place between the JV and Varsity games on September 21st, at the MAC vs. Pendleton County.  Show your support for our 10 seniors, their families and the rest of this team.
