Weather gods promising perfect football weather thursday evening at gilligan stadium in Bellevue - Mustangs seek third consecutive win
Our Brossart Mustangs, coming off of a pair of impressive victories over Dayton and Newport, travel to Gilligan Stadium in Bellevue for a rare Thursday evening engagement on the Bermuda Grass, brought about by an officials shortage.
While Brossart has won three of our previous five encounters, the Black and Gold Tigers lead the all-time series 6-3. In our first four engagements, from 2007 to 2010, Bellevue laid over our Mustangs by a combined 177-52 score. Our two teams did not play during our Class 2A days from 2011 through 2014. Since then our Mustangs hold a slim 3-2 edge over the Tigers. The two teams did not meet last season, but in 2019 our Mustangs were considered strong favorites, but had to pull off one of the most dramatic come-from-behind efforts in our program’s history to secure the 27-26 victory.
The 2021 Mustangs will be considered heavy favorites again Thursday night, as Bellevue has suffered sizable losses to Holy Cross and Metcalfe County.
Should our guys play up to their billing in Bellevue it will be the first time since 2015, when that team opened with 7 straight wins, that we would be 3-0.
The photos at right are from the 2007 Brossart – Bellevue game played at Gilligan Stadium. My partners are Frank Niemeier at left and Bill Klopp at right.
During that broadcast as the Mustangs were taking a 46-14 pummeling, Bill Klopp made a statement that has resonated with me over the years. He said, “These coaches know that it’s only a matter of time until Brossart catches and passes them, and that the shoe will be on the other foot.” Well, its taken a while, but it appears that Bill’s words are coming to fruition.
