For 12 minutes our Mustangs and the 3A Lloyd Juggernauts played toe to toe, scoreless football. Lloyd had a touchdown called back, and Quinten Tischner intercepted a Juggs pass, both contributing to the scoreless status of the first quarter.
Lloyd drew first blood at the 7:11 mark in the second quarter, when Caleb Evans found Tyler Copeland for a 9 yard touchdown, as the home team took a 7-0 lead when the PAT was good. Undeterred, our Mustangs answered on a 1 yard plunge by Cam Mandel set up by a trio of pass receptions by Isaac Amin, Nick Cozzi, and Brady Boruske. When Max Runge split the uprights, we were knotted at 7s with 3:10 remaining in the half. At this point in the period it was our goal to get to halftime with no further damage. However, this was not to be as two Lloyd offensive plays later Yourii Collins went on a 41 yard trophy run, and that quickly it was 13-7 when the 2-Point conversion failed. Unfortunately, we came up empty on our final possession of the half, and Lloyd took advantage two plays later, when Evans finished off anther two play set, carrying the ball 4 yards into the endzone, and what was a 7-7 game just three minutes earlier was now a 19-7 Brossart deficit at the half. Ouch!
Depth, injury, speed, athleticism, and fatigue all factored in what took place at the onset of the third period. Having deferred, we received the kick-off to start the second half. However, on our first play from scrimmage, Landon Geyer, uncharacteristically spit up the football, which was recovered at the Brossart 25 yard line, and was quickly converted to a Lloyd touchdown. This one would be followed a play later when again we turned the football over, and that quickly it became 32-7, and they were not done yet. Two more touchdowns were scored before the third period mercifully came to an end, with a running clock in effect at 44-7.
In the final stanza we would execute a safety, making it 44-9, and Tyler Holtz would connect with Isaac Amin on a 50 yard touchdown aerial. The final score would become 44-16 when Max Runge knocked home his second PAT of the night. In addition to kicking PATs and kicking off, Runge was pressed into action as our punter, when Luke Alwell, a double duty soccer/football player, tore his ACL Thursday night during their 1-0 soccer win over Holy Cross. On a brighter note, it was good to see Conner Lachenman back in action Friday night, and again in the JV game Saturday morning.
On the night, (Oficially) Tyler Holtz was 11 of 24 through the air for 153 yards and a touchdown. He was picked off on two occasions. Cam Mandel led our ground assault with 11 carries for 42 yards and a touchdown. Isaac Amin gathered up 80 yards on two pass receptions that included a touchdown.
