Mustangs Go 1-0 In District Play, and Improve to 6-1 on the Season with a 35-0 Win Over Holy Cross

Holy Cross came to within a half yard of going ahead 6-0 early in the second quarter. However football fields are 100 yards and not 99 1/2 yards, leaving the Indians a foot and a half short, turning the ball over to the Mustang offense who marched the ball the requisite 99 1/2 yards in the other direction to take a lead that we wouldn’t relinquish.

The Holy Cross Indians, fresh off of a 38-0 win over Morgan County on the road, came to play Friday night, causing the Mustang defense problems stopping the sizable Junior back, Trevin Figgs, who plowed through our line for several early game gainers. Neither team was able to sustain a first quarter drive, but the Indians set themselves up to score in the waning moments of the period, going 1st and Goal from the 7 yard line at the onset of the 2nd stanza.

With the bullet dodged, Tyler Holtz and company found themselves with 99 1/2 yards of real estate in front of them. Cam Mandel gave his team some breathing room, carrying the piggy 30 yards while picking up a first down. On the ensuing play Keegan Gulley took us to mid-field and another first down. Three first downs later Tyler found Keegan Gulley from 3 yards out and the Mustangs were on the board with a 7-0 lead when Max Runge hit his first of five extra points on the night. Two minutes later Holtz went to the air once again, connecting on an 18 yard aerial to Isaac Amin, who made a tough catch for our second score of the period. Following the Runge PAT, we led 14-0 at halftime.

The Mustangs , who had won the toss and deferred to the second half, put together an 82 yard drive that culminated five minutes later with Cam Mandel scoring on an 18 yard trophy run, giving his team a 21-0 lead, enroute to the 35-0 victory. Holy Cross never threatened in the second half. In that final period Holtz hit Quinten Tischner in a play incorporating a bit of Mustang chicanery, followed by a late-game 1 Yard plunge by Landon Geyer, who had set up that touchdown and had a big night on offense.

For their efforts Geyer was named the Offensive Player of the Game, and Anthony Schuck who was key defensively all night long, was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Game.

This win over district opponent, Holy Cross, sets up a district clash with the Defending Champion Ludlow Panthers, next Friday night at the MAC. Ludlow is 1-0 in district play, having defeated Trimble County 54-0 Thursday night.
