Much as in our Dixie loss, our Lady Stangs scored early and often out of the gate, establishing a 17-8 first quarter lead while out-playing their crosstown counterparts, BUT from that point on Campbell County would abandon their zone defense and outscore us 35-24, overcoming that early game deficit, and timing the winning basket at the final second of the game by Isabella Jayasuriya to take their first lead of the game at the final horn. In our past three losses – two of them to Holy Cross – we have lost by 1, 2 and in Overtime.
With the win, the Lady Camels have now maintained possession of the traveling trophy for the third consecutive time – all three by narrow margins. Jaysuriya finished the game with 16 points and was named the Camels Player of the Game. On our side of the ledger, our Freshman Kylie Smith led all scorers with 22 points an took home Player of the Game honors for the Lady Stangs.
Weather permitting, our girls will be home on Monday night to host Holmes in an NKAC DivII contest, their final prep for the upcoming 10th Region All “A” Classic Tournament, tipping off next Friday at Robertson County, where we will face the host Lady Devils.

There were several positive takeaways by our Mustangs in their crosstown bout with Campbell County. Falling behind early 8-2 we accepted the challenge and outscored the Camels 4-2, finishing out the period down 4, and then topping the defending Regional Champs 16-15 over the next 8 minutes, narrowing the margin to 3 points at 25-22 at intermission and then scoring the first bucket of the second half narrowing the margin to one – as close as we would come. The Camels hit five 3-pointers to our three in the first half. Coach Sowder couldn’t have been a bit happy with his team’s status over the first sixteen minutes. Fortunately for the Camels, their hot-handed shooting continued as Aiden Dowds, and Xavier Fancher knocked home four more long-range bombs in the third stanza, contributing to their mounting what would be an insurmountable 37-29 lead, and pushing it out to 48-35 after three periods, and cruising to the 70-54 win.
Camel Senior Xavier Francher landed four 3-pointers on the night, contributing to his leading all scorers with 20 points, earning him the Camels’ Player of the Game Award while freshman phenom, Austin Davie added 17. On the night the Camels landed ten threes as a team. Our Mustangs countered with six of them. Our Mustangs were led by Dom Hadden with 14 points, and Parker Mulberry added 10.
We will anticipate a pair of regular season games with Pendleton County on Tuesday and Highlands on Wednesday, prior to embarking on what we hope will be a run in the 10th Region All “A” Classic that will take us to Owensboro for the All “A” Big Show at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
