Boys Soccer Celebrates Senior Night With a 5-1 Win Over St. Henry

Mustang winning streak extends to 6 games, improving to 8-5.

The boys returned to the MAC, for the first time since August 28th, to take on the St. Henry Crusaders and to celebrate Senior Night. With the plaza nicely decorated with posters, pictures, and memories of our 7 seniors…fans filtered in to watch both the JV and Varsity teams compete.

The JV squad continued to impress with a 4-1 win.  Sophomore Harrison Besse had 2 goals, as did sophomore Alvaro Gerboles Lopez. Nathan Ruth had an amazing assist to Gerboles with 30 seconds left in the match.

Between games, we celebrated the contribution that our 7 seniors have made to this program and Bishop Brossart.  Players escorted their parents the field for pictures and a brief introduction.  This year, this special group has been spread throughout the field, with 4 defenders, 2 midfielders and 1 striker.  Although, throughout the years, many of them have played various positions. The seniors from St. Henry were also recognized.

With all 7 seniors in the starting lineup, the game was underway shortly after 7:30pm.  Sophomore Tyler Smith added to his team-leading goal total with his 11th goal of the season, just 1:46 seconds into the match, from a short corner kick play.  Ten minutes later, Senior Tyler Twehues added one of his own, after a 50 yard sprint to catch the long pass by Tyler Smith, putting the Mustangs up 2-0.  This was also the score at halftime.

The Mustangs wasted no time in the second half when Senior Andrew Beck received a pass over the defense, gained control and powered a shot passed the Crusader goalie.

The defense continued to earn respect by stopping nearly every run that St. Henry made. An unfortunate foul from about 20 yards out, resulted in the only Crusader goal of the night, from a free kick by Senior Cam Montgomery and last touched by Junior Kyle Ziegelmeyer.

At the 13:51 mark, Junior Colin Ratcliff saw an opening from about 20 yards and fired a shot, putting the Mustangs up 4-1. But they weren’t finished.  From the left side of the box, Sophomore Tyler Smith stole the ball from a defender and chalked up ANOTHER goal…his 12th of the season…with just over 8 minutes to play.

A solid team effort and total domination throughout the game resulted in a final score of 5-1.

The Mustangs look to take on the Eagles of Scott High School on Thursday.  Followed by a match with the Beechwood Tigers in the 9th/10th Region All “A” Sectional, hosted at the MAC this Saturday.  Game time is set for 12:00.  A win sends us to compete in the State Tournament.

A message from Coach Schaeffer and his staff to our Seniors:

What a testament this should be to BBHS and all of our families – as today we pay respect and special attention to YET ANOTHER very special group of young men. I thank the parents AND the school for trusting me and the coaching staff to work with their young student-athletes – trying to be just a small part of preparing them for their future.

Life is not soccer but soccer is a part of our life. Be sure you continue to respect and apply what IT has taught you as you will soon take your next steps in life. This group of young men set goals this season for the TEAM —and we have seen them and their team work so hard to achieve those goals. You take the staff’s praise – you take the staff’s criticism – you take the wins – you take the losses – and you have learned to manage all it with maturity, class, respect, and especially hard work. We are proud of you. It has been a journey and it is not over.

Remember, you will not be perfect — but can have perfect effort and intentions. Today’s game is not about a win or a loss — but about continuing that effort …and representing the work you have put in this season and over the years to be the person, student, player, and teammate you aspire to be. Nothing will be GIVEN to you…so work hard – work smart – and enjoy the ride… We wish you the best!

Thank you! BBHS Coaching Staff
