Mustangs Call On Passing Game - Score two touchdowns via air - 36 yards to Evan Orth and 60 yards to Jed Martin

Whether our present day Mustangs realize it or not, Friday night at the MAC they cleared a major hurdle and took a giant step forward defeating Lloyd Memorial who simply do not lose to Class 1A football teams.
The Mustangs, who have lived bv the run in our first four victories, went to the air on this night, which paved the way to the 13-8 win.
Lloyd countered with a long drive starting at their own 31 yard line, and on fourth and short at the Brossart 21 yard line we forced a Juggernaut fumble, recovered by Jed Martin, giving the Mustangs possession of the piggy back at our own ten yard line. Unable to clear daylight, Leicht was sacked in the endzone for a Safety, and quickly it was a 7-2 contest and the Juggs were on the board. The threat mounted on the kickoff to the Juggs, the result of the safety, as it was run back to the Brossart one yard line and then into the endzone by fullback Kaiden Zulager and it would remain 8-7 Lloyd, when we thwarted the Juggs’ 2 point conversion.
Coach Paul Wiggins did not dispute me in our pre-game interview when I said that last night’s game with Lloyd was a major challenge, and that Lloyd was on the bus en-route to the MAC expecting to tack on another win over a Class 1A opponent. Paul and I both remember our tough days in Class 2A where Lloyd had their way with us.
Reminiscent of the Holy Cross game a week ago, neither team was able to muster a first down on our first set of downs. But again, just as like a week ago, Jacob Leicht would orchestrate a 62 yard drive, culminating with a 36 yard pass touchdown pass to Evan Orth, and when Dewey Schwartz split the uprights, the Mustangs drew first blood 7-0.
The score would remain 8-7 with LLoyd on top, into the mid-fourth quarter, despite weathering a couple of Lloyd threats and a called back touchdown, and on the other hand, a couple of missed Leicht passes that had the potential to put additional numbers on the board. With the clock becoming a major factor, we began a drive at our own 25 yard line. With 3:55 minutes to play in the game Jacob Leicht found Jed Martin out of the backfield, hit him with a strike and Martin did the rest, carrying the ball into the endzone for an apparent score. But there was a flag on the play back at the 40 yard line, and the Lloyd fans breathed a short lived sigh of relief. After holding a conference, the officials picked up the flag, igniting bedlam among Brossart fans, and the Mustangs took the lead 13-8 after failing on the two-point conversion attempt.
Lloyd would seemingly get the last swing of the bat, taking possession at their own 40 yard line, following a defensive kick-off by Luke Piscitello. During that series, the Juggs would cough up the football, recovered by Jacob Leicht, and when we picked up our final first down, with Lloyd having used their last time out, this game went into the record books as our fifth consecutive victory for only the third time in our history – a 13-8 win over the 2A Juggs.
Per Terry Boehmker at the Northern Kentucky Tribune, Jacob Leicht passed for 105 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 66 yards. Jed Martin had pass receptions for 64 yards, rushed for 45 yards, and passed for 36 yards.
For their efforts, Jacob Leicht was awarded the Snappy Tomato Offensive Player of the Game, and Eli Twehues who made two huge defensive plays when the game was on the line, the Defensive Player of the Game. Again, any number of players could have qualified for either award.

The Mustangs remain home for the third of four straight home games next Friday night as we host the Ludlow Panthers.
Tim Cooper who had family commitments this week will be back on the sideline next Friday night.
Game time will be 7pm and this will be our final tuneup for our first district seeding competition versus Nicholas County on Friday, October 1st. The Blue Jackets were idle this week when Pendleton County defected, the result of Covid. There were only 10 games on Friday night’s schedule that were affected by Covid this week, as opposed to 27 back on opening night, and none of those involved teams from Northern Kentucky.
Our Brossart JV Football team shut out the homestanding JV Juggs 20-0 on Saturday morning. Junior Luke Piscitello went the distance on a broken play, intended to be a punt, and Freshman Keegan Gulley also scored a touchdown(s) in the winning effort. Our Varsity is presently 5-0, the JVs are 2-0 and our Junior High Colts are 3-1 after defeating Sharp Middle School earlier this week.
