Mustangs Look To Improve to 6-0, Break Four Game Losing Streak to Ludlow
The most miserable game that I broadcast last season was from the press box rooftop at Ludlow in wind, spitting rain, and temperatures dropping into the low 40s in front of a booming speaker which did its best to distort our output. Add this to the fact that Braxton Newborn was eating our lunch, gaining 220 yards while scoring 5 touchdowns en route to a 54-33 Panthers victory, and it was not a fun night to be a Mustang. It was also Ludlow’s fourth consecutive victory over our Mustangs.
On paper our Mustangs are in great position to set things right with Ludlow who come to the MAC with a 1 Win, and 3 Loss record. Their lone win, a 21-13 conquest of Bracken County, coming in the river city on Opening Night. In that game Braxton Newborn ran for 134 yards and scored 2 of the 3 Ludlow touchdowns.
Let’s take a closer look at the three Ludlow losses. After beating Bracken County they traveled across the river and were competitive with Lockland, dropping a 20-13 decision. Following a bye week the Paris Greyhounds, who we will see three weeks down the road, came from behind to overtake the homestanding Panthers 32-28 in a game where Newborn only carried the piggy six times for 65 yards and may have been injured in that game, which could account for the Paris comeback. Most recently Carroll County rolled over Ludlow, putting up 61 points in a 61-20 Ludlow loss. Braxton Newborn did not play. The Ludlow Panthers are obviously a different team with or without their star running-back. Quarterback Brogan O’Brien can carry the mail having rushed on 58 attempts for 237 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Brossart is down 3-9 in our overall series with Ludlow, and are currently on a four game skid, and have lost six of our last eight. We lost our first three matches back in 2007, 2008, and 2009 before defeating the Panthers 35-13 in 2010.
With or without Newborn, I like our chances this Friday against the Panthers. Our defense has been solid, and we added a new successful dimension to our offense, unveiling our passing attack a week ago vs Lloyd. I think we are a pretty good football team on both sides of the ball, and if Ludlow can get us in Alexandria my hat will be off to them.
Friday night is Football Alumni Recognition Night. I think we do as good as anyone at honoring our Football past, having had a near Football-Death experience back in 2014. Ted MacDonald will once again join me in the booth, as Vince Narone, has a previous commitment. It will be good working with Ted, who was my long time home game partner during his brother Tyler’s football career here, and beyond.
Game time is 7pm, and the weather man says excellent football weather. Live audio and video broadcasts beginning at 6:40pm.
