Mustangs Complete "Pre-Season" Unschathed at 6-0 with 41-7 Workmanlike Win Over Ludlow

A couple of clarifications. We actually went to 2A in 2011 and were in our fourth year of 2A in 2014, having lost 12 consecutive 2A games by sizable margins. In 2015 we were realigned back to Class 1A and experienced a rebirth, posting a 9-2 record, with 32 players on the roster.

Our past history with Ludlow be damned, this team put that all in the past, and performed yet another ritual execution of an opponent, defeating the Panthers 41-7 on Football Alumni Night at the MAC, with Bishop-elect Iffert in the house to take in the game.
The Mustangs pretty much laid over the Ludlow Panthers early on in the game, but after two offensive series apiece, Brossart was finally able to put numbers on the scoreboard with 1:43 remaining in the period, when Austin Schadler carried the piggy two yards to finish off a 63 yard drive for a touchdown. A friendly flag moved the football halfway to the goal line on the PAT effort, allowing Jacob Leicht to score, giving the Mustangs an 8-0 lead coming out of the first quarter.
The Mustangs struck again midway through the second period when Jacob Leicht connected on a 49 yard touchdown pass to David Govan – Woof, Woof!!!, and when the PAT failed we settled for a 14-0 lead. We worked the clock to a position where we threatened to score late in the first half and succeeded, scoring on a 1 yard keeper by Jacob Leicht topping off a 51 yard drive with just 24 ticks raining, giving the Stangs a 21-0 lead when Andrew Schwartz split the uprights – And we weren’t finished yet. As Brogan O’Brien swung for the fences, unloading a home run, Hail Mary pass with the half about to expire, Derek Martin read out the pass and returned it for a Brossart Pick Six touchdown. Schwartz knocked home the PAT and we led 28-0 as time expired in the half. In that half the Mustangs defense limited the Panthers to a pair of first downs.
Ludlow kicked off to the Mustangs to open the second half and it would take Leicht 2 minutes and 52 seconds to orchestrate a fifty yard drive that saw Jed Martin complete the drive with a five yard touchdown run. The PAT was no good, but the Mustangs had now opened a seemingly insurmountable 34-0 lead.
The lone Ludlow bright spot would occur with 53 seconds remaining in the third quarter, as they mounted a 60 yard drive culminated with a 10 yard touchdown pass from O’Brien to Jaxson Rice. The PAT was good, and it was now 34-7 with a quarter to play. The Ludlow momentum was short lived as fifty seconds later Jed Martin would cause the bell to ring as he went on a 45 yard trophy run, and that quickly we were back on top by 34 at 41-7 when Schwartz succeeded on the PAT. Neither team was able to put further numbers on the scoreboard, and 41-7 was the final score. With the win the Mustangs improve to 6-0 on the season, and will attempt to tie the school record for Most Wins to Start a Season, currently held by the 2015 team who began with a 7-0 mark, next week when we begin district seeding play versus Nicholas County at the MAC. 6-0 marks our second best start-ever to a season.
Terry Boehmker at the Northern Kentucky Tribune reports that Senior running back Jed Martin rushed for 138 yards on 14 carries and scored twice for the Mustangs. Senior quarterback Jacob Leicht had 119 yards rushing and 75 passing. He scored on a 1-yard run and threw a 49-yard TD pass to David Govan.
Other stats of interest: Jacob Leicht was 4 of 6 though the air. David Govan had one reception for a 49 yard TD, and Evan Orth had two receptions for 18 yards. Andrew Schwartz was 3 of 4 on PATs. Evan Orth was credited with 9 tackles, Schadler 8, and Lukes 7. Derek Martin had the pass interception and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown.
Ludlow (1-5) scored its only touchdown in the third quarter when junior Jaxson Rice caught a 10-yard pass from senior Brogan O’Brien.

Despite the fact that Martin’s Pick Six was actually a defensive play I’ll make up my own rules and award him the Offensive Player of the Game Award. Again this week there were a myriad of good candidates. Thomas Sayers had a huge night, and of course Jacob and Jed could be awarded free pizza every week. Both lines were really good last night. Sophomore Luke Schroeder’s name continues to pop up at opportune times, and Evan Orth and David Govan need to earn a Snappy distinction in one of our upcoming games for their total effort and impact on both sides of the ball.
