Mustangs Look To Secure A Home Playoff Game with 8th Straight overall season victory - Crack BGP Class 1A Top Ten
For the first time in five weeks we will load the trailer and head out on the open highway for a game not played at the MAC. Friday night we head to Brooksville for a district seeding battle with the surprising Bracken County Polar Bears, with huge district seeding implications.
The Polar Bears, who won a single game in the Covid shortened 2020 campaign, and were winless (0-11) in 2019, are on the rebound.
The 2021 Polar Bears were competitive on Opening Night losing narrowly to Ludlow in the River City. Since then they have won four of their last six contests, with that all-important district seeding battle win over Paris a week ago in Brooksville. Meanwhile our Mustangs have reeled off seven consecutive victories, including the district seeding match with Nichoas County, while issuing four shutouts along the way. Ludlow, who we handled 41-7 in the friendly confines, is our only common opponent.
The Polar Bears are led by quarterback Charlie Schultz who has thrown for 6 touchdowns , while being picked on 5 occasions. Their primary ball-carrier, Payton Tully has gained a phenomenal 897 yards, scored 8 touchdowns and averages a whooping 149 yards per game. Ethan Hunt is their primary receiver, gaining 218 yards on 6 receptions, scoring 4 touchdowns. Schultz, Tully, and Hunt, all seniors, have combined for 106 of the Bears’ 160 total season points.
Over the years Brossart owns an 8-2 series advantage, and are on a three year win streak. Both of our losses have come in Brooksville – 2017 and what was thought to be a major upset back in 2012.
A win over the Polar Bears on Friday night would assure the Mustangs of at least one home field playoff game and find each of the other three competitors with at least one loss, keeping us in control of our destiny. We will be keeping our eyes on the Paris at Nicholas County game Friday night as well, (game originally scheduled for Thursday was postponed due to lightnng) where one of those two teams will sustain their second district seeding loss. A win by Bracken County over our Mustangs would pin district losses on ourselves and the winner of the Nicholas County – Paris game heading in to the final week of district seeding competition, with Bracken County in the drivers seat. What is the old saying???? Just win, baby, win!!!
