Throughout the night, the Mustangs’ passing was the key to the win. The defensive line controlled most of the Cougars’ efforts, then sent the ball to the midfield, and quickly to the offense.

Seventeen minutes into the game, Sophomore Carter Goodman sent a throw-in pass into the midfield and found Junior Landon Bain for the Mustangs’ first goal of the night.

Roughly 4 minutes later, following a high-kick call on the Cougars, Sophomore Tyler Smith took the free kick and added to his season assist total (18) by serving up Senior Andrew Beck, putting the Mustangs up 2-0 with just under 20 minutes left to play in the half.

The Tyler Smith-to-Tyler Twehues short corner kick play sailed into the box, finding Junior Ivan Rodero Lopez, who’s header found Senior defender Ryan Ebert standing at the 8 yard line with an open shot. Ebert scored his first Varsity goal at the 11 minute mark and played defense the entire game, stopping many of Calvary’s offensive threats.

The second half was mostly about time management but also added a few more goals to secure the win.  A few of next year’s up-and-coming Varsity players notched some valuable minutes.

Five minutes into the second half, Junior Colin Ratcliff sent a header into the box and found Sophomore Tyler Smith, who scored his 16th goal of the season.

The Cougars headed into scoring territory with 24 minutes to go, but Senior Ty Schaeffer stripped the ball and quickly found his midfielders, setting up a nice offensive possession.  Sophomore Brennen Callahan and Senior Andrew Beck made a few strategic passes, eventually finding Smith at the 15 yard line.  His shot was too much for the goalkeeper to handle, as the deflection caused the ball to spin right into the goal.

Smith’s 17th goal of the season would be the final goal of the night, ending the game at 5-0.

Junior Logan Rauen turned in a clean sheet with 4 officially-recorded saves, and played a key role in Tuesday night's shutout.
