As head coach Mike Code cut the nets down 16 times, while leading his Mustangs to district and/or 10th Region "A" Championships, plus the State "A" Championship. His crowning achievement was winning the All "A" State Tournament in 2007

Mike Code dedicated 18 seasons to Brosssart Mustangs basketball, serving as our head coach 16 years, from 2004 through 2020, following a 2 year stint as Coach Willie Schlarman’s Varsity assistant.  Mike was at Highlands from 1995 through 2002, first compiling a 40-2 record as freshmen coach in two seasons before joining Coach John Messmer’s staff where the Bluebirds won three consecutive 9th Region Championships in 1997, 1998, and 1999.  He and former Mustang head coach Willie Schlarman both served as assistants on the 1997 team which played in the “Sweet Sixteen” Championship Game at Rupp Arena where they were State Runners-up to Louisville Eastern.

In 2000 Coach Mike Code had the privilege of serving as an assistant on the Kentucky All-Stars Coaching Staff.

Under Mike’s leadership our Brossart Mustangs were District Champions in 2005, 2007, and 2013. NKAC Division II Champions in 2005, 2007, and 2009; 10th Region “A” Champs in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2020.  Mike was named the 10th Region Class A “Coach of the Year” in each of those 10th “A” Championship seasons.  His 2007 Mustangs were All “A” State Champions.

Mike was named the KABC 10th Region Coach of the Year in 2007, 2016, and again in 2020. He was the Ky Post and The Enquirer Coach of the Year in 2007, and THE 10th Region Coach of the Year in 2012-13. Mike is a member of the 10th Region Hall of Fame, Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame and the Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.

During his head coaching career here at Brossart, Mike amassed a 303-146 record, winning 20 games or more on five occasions, with 15 of those teams sporting winning records.  In 2006-07 his team went 28-5, winning the All “A” State Tournament, and defeated Covington Catholic on their floor on their Senior night, earning us the ranking of Number One in Northern Kentucky in the final coaches poll.  His 2004-05 Mustangs had accomplished the same feat. In the three seasons from 2011 through 2014 we notched 69 wins against only 19 losses.

Coach Code’s 16 seasons marks the longest tenure of any head coach to have served at Brossart High School, and his number of wins (303) winning percentage of .675 is an all-time best.

At the time of his stepping down as our head coach, he held the distinction of being the “Dean of 10th Region Coaches”, having served longer in that capacity than any other active 10th Region Head Coach.

Mike Code broght noteriety to the Brossart Mustangs basketball program and Bishop Brossart High School, often being interviewed by the media of the state, while perfroming on grand stages at premiere events.

Coaching runs in the Code family.  Dad, Bill, is one of the winningest coaches in the history of Northern Kentucky Basketball.  Brother, Scott, served two years as our head coach following following Mike's stepping down following the 2019-20 season.  Scott is presently the head coach at Dixie Heights High School, where Mike is his assistant.

One of Mike’s most satisfying wins came in the 2007 All “A” State Tournament semi-finals when we took on University Heights, who were huge favorites in this game, and to win the tournament for the eighth time.  The ’07 Blazers not only had the services of Scotty Hobson who went on to play in the NBA, but also three additional players who played Division I college basketball.  Our Mustangs’ defense frustrated them, limiting the Blazers to 38 points as we drew off to beat UHA 58-38,  advancing to the “A” State finals, where we would defeat Bardstown in the championship game.

Mike played his high school basketball at Walton-Verona High School.  He is married to his wife, the former Kimberly Clayton.  The couple reside in Crittenden with their two sons Matthew and Andrew who we watched grow up in our gym

He retired in the spring of 2024 after 30 years as a Health teacher at Highlands High School.  In 2019 he was named “Teacher of the Year” at Highlands.  He will be teaching Health and Phys Ed here at Brossart beginning the 2024-25 school year.

In his 16 years of coaching here at Brossart, his players always referred to him as “Awesome.”
