April 4th - BBHS 16, NEWPORT 0 - THREE INNINGS NKAC DIV II
Monday’s home game with Newport lasted exactly 48 minutes during which time our Mustangs scored 16 runs on 14 hits, sending 21 batters to the plate in two innings, blanking the Wildcats 16-0 in a three inning NKAC Division II, run-rule event.
Mitchell Combs pitched the three inning shutout, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out three, walking one, and hitting one batter while improving to 2-1 on the season. Evan Moore feasted on Newport pitching going 2 for 2 with a double and a triple, knocking in 5 Mustangs. Collin Combs hit his second home run of the season, our team’s eighth and knocked home 4 teammates. Keegan Gulley, Mitchell Combs, Alex Kramer, and Daniel Williamson (2 RBIs) all doubled in the event.
Our Mustangs came into this week with a 4-5-1 record, and after the Newport game are .500 with a 2 1/2-1/2 mark in NKAC Div II play.
Ryan Ebert is our leading hitter at .452, with Evan Moore hot on his heels at .448. We have four others batting over .300 – Collin Combs, Mitchell Combs, Andrew Beck, and Brandon Bezold. As a team we are hitting an impressive .316. Ebert leads the team in hits with 14, Moore is the RBIs leader with 23. Brandon Bezold tops the team in doubles with 5, and Evan Moore has our only triple. Three Mustangs have hit a pair of home runs – Evan Moore, Collin Combs, and Alex Amin. On the mound, Mitchell Combs sports the top record of two wins against a single loss.
Unfortunately, we have four starters on the injured list. Alex Amin, Adam Bezold, Robbie Verst, and Logan Meyer.
April 6th - BBHS @HOLMES (NKAC DIV II) - Postponed, Inclement Weather
APRIL 7TH - BBHS 11, PARIS 0 - 10TH REGION 'A' OPENING ROUND
Mustangs Run-Rule Paris 11-0 and advance to the semi-finals of the 10th Region All “A” Classic Tournament, which is now scheduled for 12:30pm on Sunday at the Paris Athletic Complex in Paris. After a competitive inning and a half, the Mustangs exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second inning, all coming with two outs, with the big blow being a Evan Moore grand slam home run. We added five more runs in the bottom of the third, again, all with two outs. On the breezy, cool afternoon, Moore was the starting and winning pitcher, going three complete innings giving up no runs on one hit, while striking out seven, without issuing a free pass. Moore improves to 3-1 on the season. Charles Hartig came on in relief and went two full innings, allowing no runs on one hit, while striking out four Paris batters. Logan Meyer retuned to the Mustangs lineup, taking a pair of walks and scoring a pair of runs. Evan Moore was perfect 3 for 3, improving his average to 500, and his RBIs total to 28 – Yowza!!! Collin Combs was 2 for 3 with a RBE and 2 runs scored. Mitchell Combs was 2-2 with a pair of RBIs.
APRIL 10TH - BBHS 5, BRACKEN CO 1 - 10TH REGION '"A" SEMI-FINALS
Sun comes out, Hartig heats up…Moore knocks home game winner and Mustangs move on to the 10th Region “A” Finals with a 5-1 win over Bracken County.
Our Mustangs advance to the 10th Region “A” Championship with a 5-1 win over Bracken County on Sunday afternoon in Brooksville. Senior Charles Hartig, who I consider a warm-weather pitcher, was brilliant, going six complete innings, allowing only a single unearned run, on three hits, striking out four, and scattering four bases on balls. Up 1-0 moving in to the top of the fifth, our guys would put together yet another big inning, which has become their trade mark, scoring four times.
With Brandon Bezold and Logan Meyers aboard, Evan Moore did what he has done all season, doubling to knock home both baserunners which proved to be the winning runs, his 29th and 30 RBIs of the season. Logan Meyer was the only Mustang with a multiple-hit afternoon, going 2 for 4. At some point in the near future we will play the winner of Nicholas County and Augusta for the 10th Region “A” Championship. With the win the Mustangs improve to 7-5-1. Bracken County Polar Bear Sophomore was their starter and took the loss, striking out ten Mustangs along the way.
The schedule for the upcoming week is very unofficial. We are scheduled to play Beechwood at home on Monday, At Covington Catholic on Tuesday, Home vs NCC on Wednesday, and 11am on Thursday at Meinken Field vs Holy Cross, which we will broadcast live. With the dynamics of needing to play the 10th Region “A” Championship game, and possibly having Beechwood as a Semi-State opponent, this could all change. Stay Tuned.
