Baseball/Softball Update: The Post-Season

May 17th -  BBHS 17,  SCOTT 2 (37th District Tournament)

In a game that took two hours and five minutes to play four innings, our Mustangs dismantled the Scott Eagles 17-2.  The Mustangs needed a Mitch Combs (previously reported in error as Adam Bezold) Home Run back on May 2nd to defeat Scott 4-1 at St. Mary in their District Seeding game, but on this day it was all Brossart after exploding for 8 runs in the 2nd inning.  In that stanza the big blow would be a three run Colin Combs home run, producing three of the five RBIs that C-Squared would record on the evening.   He wasn’t the only Brossart hitter who had a big night.  Ryan Ebert went 2 for 2 knocking home one run, and crossing the plate himself on four occasions.  Evan Moore duplicated Eberts 2 for 2 effort at the plate that included a 3 run double.    Mitchell Combs was 2 of 3 with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored.  Adam Bezold was 1 for 2 with a ribbie and two runs scored.  Alex Amin was also 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

Junior Colin Combs hasd a career night in the span of two innings where he had a single and a home run that netted 5 Brossart Runs.

Evan Moore, who arguably didn’t have his best stuff on this night, but didn’t need it, started and went the 4 inning distance, winning his fourth game of the campaign,, allowing two runs, only one of which was earned, four hits walked five, and whiffed 7.  Meanwhile on the other side of the ledger, the game was turned into a near travesty after starter Blaise Huiet was chased after going one and two-thirds of an inning, allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 9 hits walking 2 and striking out 4.  Following his departure Scott marched 8 additional pitchers to the mound in the remaining two and two-thirds innings until the Mustangs mercifully accumulated the required 15 run lead to lay this one to rest.,  Colin Combs’ home run was the team’s 20th of the season, and his personal sixth round tripper.

With the win the Mustangs advance to Wednesday night’s 6pm District Championship Game versus Campbell County who run-ruled Calvary Christian in the first game of the Tuesday night twin bill.  Both the Camels and Mustangs qualify for the 10th Region tournament to be contested next week on the hilltop in Cynthiana at Harrison County High School.

May 20th – Campbell Co 13,  BBHS 2  (District Championship Game)

Mustangs Down, BUT, Not Out, despite 13-2, Five Inning Loss to Campbell County in the 37th District Championship Game.

Through the first inning, all appearances were that this would be a contentious game.  The Mustangs plated a run in the first inning, and our left-fielder, Alex Amin, threw out a Campbell County runner attempting to score, to blank the Camels heading to the second, where the Mustangs went down in order.  The wheels came off in the Camels second when they sent 15 batters to the plate scoring 9 runs on 5 hits, aided by 4 walks and 3 hit batters.  The Mustangs would add another run in the top of the third, but for all intents and purposes, that was that.  Campbell County added 4 more runs in the home third.  Charles Hartig was our starter and loser, while Max Lause and Zach Franzen combined for the win.

Despite the lopsided loss, there were some bright spots.  Andrew Beck came on in relief late in the fateful second inning and struck out batter number 14 and 15 to end what could have been an even more disastrous frame.  Ryan Ebert went 2 for 3 with a run scored, Evan Moore was one of two, Colin Combs was 2 of 3 with 2 RBIs, and Alex Amin, in addition to making two excellent throws to the plate from left field, went 1 of 2 at the dish.  Brandon Bezold pitched the fourth inning and sat down the Camels on seven pitches –  three fly outs.  Evan Moore and Colin Combs were named to the All-District Tournament Team.

Our Mustangs will draw either Mason County, Montgomery County, or Nicholas County in next week’s 10th Region Tournament at Harrison County High School on either Monday or Tuesday.  Campbell County will get either Bracken County,, GRC or Harrison County..  The draw will take place Saturday morning at Harrison County High School. .

May 23rd  –  Nicholas County 7, BBHS 0  (10th Region Opening Round)

Mustangs Go Quietly Into the Off-Season With 7-0, 2 Hit Loss To Nicholas County in Regional Lidlifter.

Nicholas County, who had lost 15 of their previous 17 encounters with our Mustangs, dating back to 2005 until this season, completed the 2022 two-game sweep of our guys, with a 7-0 shutout, limiting us to two Adam Bezold singles. .  The earlier loss this season came in the 10th Region “A” Championship game when we were blanked 3-0 by their ace Dalton Davenport.  On this night, Brayson Ring and Branson Sosby combined for the 2-hit effort, striking out 10 and walking only 2.  Brossart Junior Evan Moore went 4 2/3rds innings for our Mustangs allowing 7 runs, on 8 hits, striking out 5, walking 8 and hitting 2 batters.  Brandon Bezold closed out the final inning and a third, allowing a hit and striking out two.  The Mustangs drop the curtain on the 2022 Baseball Season with a 17-17-1 record.  With the loss the high school careers of Ryan Ebert, Adam Bezold , Mitchell Combs, Alex Kramer, Daniel Williamson, Andrew Beck and Charles Hartig come to an end.  I will publish some final team stats as they become available over the next few days.
