Evan McDole played college baseball for four years at NKU. He is presently a member of the 10th Region Hall of Fame.

There are a lot of fond memories stored in these game reports over the years, many with photo files attached. The 2004-05 Mustangs were an “end of an era” team that beat Campbell County by 30 points in the Crosstown Classic, defeated Cincinnati Oak Hills in the Bluegrass-Buckeye played in the Cintas Center, took out Lexington Catholic in the Fifth/Third Tournament at Lexcath, destroyed NCC 57-39, knocked off CovCath on their senior night in Park Hills to claim the Number One ranking in Northern Kentucky in the final coaches poll, while the JVs were compiling a 22-0 record.  Kevin Smith and Evan McDole went on to play in college.  Other notables on that team were Brett Reilly, Steve McCarthy, Michael Schenk, Jason Cooper and Ryan Anderson.

Kevin Smith (pictured here) went on to play college ball at the University of Hawaii-Pacific.

2006

The 2006 Mustangs also defeated Campbell County in the Crosstown during a “rebuilding year” 61-47. Meanwhile the JVs ran their overall win string to 30 with a 32-25 win over the Camels. The varsity took Cincinnati LaSalle to the wire before falling 55-52 in overtime in the Bluegrass-Buckeye at NKU. One of the most improbable conquests by a Brossart team, and we have had plenty, was winning the 2005 Ashland Invitational beating a supposedly far-superior Christian County 65-56. They advanced to the semi-finals of the “A” State Tournament where we led Bardstown 28-20 at halftime, before being overtaken at the wire 63-60. Bardstown cut down the nets as “A” State Champs the next day.

2006-07

The 2006-07 Mustangs were another end of era team that was arguably the most exciting team to ever wear Mustang green. They were fearless and took on all comers. The 07s crushed the Camels in the Crosstown 65-40, again beat Oak Hills in the Bluegrass-Buckeye at NKU, went 3-1 in the 5th/3rd Classic in Lexington, and won the All “A” State Tournament with wins over NCC, Gallatin County, University Heights, and Bardstown. The NCC, UHA, and Bardstown broadcasts remain my very favorite. We went back to CovCath where they were again ranked Number 1 in NoKy and again embarrassed them on their senior night 63-56 and stole the top ranking away from them as we improved to 25-4. Jimmy Uebel was the heart and soul of this team comprised of 1,000 Points Club Member Troy Cooper, and seniors Nathan Mutsch, Josh Kidney, Matt Lloyd, Kyle Kramer, Luke Rebholz, and Bryan Niemeyer.

2007-08

The 2007-08s will always be known for knocking off heavily favored St. Patrick in the 10th Region “A” Semi-finals and then winning the tournament with Greg Stortz, Zach Hertzenberg, Joey Webb, Mitch Patterson, and a couple of sophomores who could play – Jordan Armstrong and Jacob Rieger. They then upset Lexington Christian in the All “A” State before bowing to eventual champ, University Heights. The Brossart-Lexington Christian broadcast ranks way up there among my all-time favorites.

2009

The ’09s won the Bracken County Invitational Tournament defeating Lewis County in the finals as they improved to 9-1 to start the season. They were narrowly defeated by Campbell County 40-37 in the MCIT, and it took a Matt Geisler tip-in on a last second inbounds play for NCC to survive Brossart 44-42 in the SyDome, while our JVs drilled the Breds 41-26. It was our Freshmen who upset a powerhouse Campbell County team in the 37th District Championship Game and then went on to win the 10th Region Freshmen Championship, defeating heavily favored Clark County in the finals. After losing 45-27 to Campbell County in the Crosstown and again in the MCIT, the Mustangs upset Campbell County 53-46 in the 37th District Tournament. Juniors Jacob Rieger scored 19 and Jordan Armstrong 13 in that one.

2009-10

In 2009-10 the Mustangs shot from the gate, winning their first eight games, including a 45-36 win over Campbell County in the Crosstown. The Mustangs won the 10th Region “A” but were edged 63-60 by Hazard in the “A” State. Jacob Rieger scored his 1,000th Point in a home game vs Cooper. The Mustangs lost narrowly to Scott in the district finals when unknown Ryan Steivers came off the bench and nailed three consecutive three-pointers. Mason County ended our 19-7 season with a 56-41 win in the 10th Regional tournament.

2010-11

Campbell County squeezed past our Mustangs 64-61 in the 2010-11 Crosstown Classic. We rebounded by coming back to win the 10th Region “A” Championship at NKU as underdogs against the favored Deming Black Devils 59-56 in overtime. It was a tough loss for Deming who featured the King twins – Luke and Kyle and a “coming out” party for Joe Jennings. The Mustangs handled NCC 49-42 in the SyDome before heading to Richmond where we would be overtaken by West Carter 75-69 in overtime in a game that ended after midnight. We finished the season with a 15-11 record. Meanwhile our freshmen were busy recording a 26-1 season, winning the Holy Cross Invitational, 37th District, and 10th Region Tournaments.

2011-12

The 2011-12 team that showcased Junior Justin Saunders ran out to an early season 10-0 record that included another win over NCC, this time 65-61 in the Lloyd Invitational Tournament. Injury sidetracked both Justin and the Mustangs, who lost their next two games narrowly to Bowling Green and Clay County sans Saunders, who would be hit and miss for the duration of the season. Joey Jennings scored 20 points against Campbell County in the Crosstown but the Mustangs came up short 58-54 in overtime. We defeated Augusta 66-53 in the 10th Region “A” opening round, where we were lit up by a sophomore named Brent Bach, who scored 32 points. The Mustangs cruised to the 10th Region “A” Title and then were upset by upstart Louisville Collegiate in the opening round of the “A” State, in one of the more frustrating games I’ve ever called. We defeated Scott in Taylor Mill on a last second put-back by sophomore Nate Verst in a game where the only second of the game in which we led was the last one. The Camels avenged their earlier season loss 46-40 in the district semi-finals to cap a 20-8 Brossart season.

2012-13

The 2012-13 team was made up of the junior nucleus – Alex Trentman, Drew Burns, Erik Rieger, Jake Jennings, Austin Shannon, and Teddy MacDonald. They joined Justin Saunders who joined the 1,000 Points Club in the Campbell County game where he scored 30 points. They ran out to a 10-0 start that included wins over 8th Region Power Oldham County and then upset Perry County Central in the 5th/3rd Classic before a full house there to see Blue-Chipper Braxton Beverly and UK recruit 6’7″ Justin Johnson, but saw the Mustangs humble the kingpins from the mountains 56-41. That broadcast is another of my very favorites. The Mustangs returned from Lexington to post a 73-56 win over Campbell County in the Crosstown. We won the 10th Region “A” title at the new Nicholas County High School, defeating Augusta 78-68 as Drew Burns took over late, and despite a 39 performance from Augusta Junior Brent Bach. The Mustangs advanced to the semi-finals of the “A” State before falling to Bardstown 58-50. We smoked Scott 62-44 in the 37th District finals and advanced to the semi-finals of the 10th Region Tournament before succumbing to the transfer infused Montgomery County Indians who went on to win the 10th Region Championship. The Mustangs closed the book on their season at 26-6.

2013-14

The 2013-14 season can be broken down into two sections – the pre-Jake Jennings injury and the post-Jake Jennings injury. Pre-Jennings injury this team was brilliant, compiling a 12-1 record as we swept through the Henry County Tournament despite facing stiff competition in Louisville DeSales, but were up to the task. A 60-41 win over Campbell County in the Crosstown Classic stamped us as a regional contender. Brent Bach was back at Augusta as a senior and the opening round 10th Region “A” Classic game with the Panthers was billed as going to determine the region’s representative in Frankfort. However, this was a no-contest, our Mustangs were brilliant that day and handed the Panthers a stunning 76-38 loss and paved the way to our winning the 10th Region “A” title. However, at practice prior to the “A” Regional finals Jake Jennings broke his hand and we were never the same. Despite the best efforts of the remainder of the Mustangs, we were upset in the “A” State by St. Mary out of Paducah, and thumped 64-44 by NCC on the Carothers road hill. Alex Trentman joined the 1,000 Points Club in a 60-49 win over Harrison County. We managed to defeat Mason County for the first time since 2000, handing them a 67-60 loss in the SyDome, and edged Scott 62-60 on an Erik Rieger 3-pointer just ahead of the horn, giving our Mustangs the top seed in the 37th District and Mike Code his 200th victory. The game also marked the return of Jennings to the lineup, which would require another adjustment period. Campbell County took advantage and knocked off our Mustangs in the 37th District tournament finals, en-route to winning the 10th Region Championship. Our season ended at the hands of Montgomery County in the regional tournament with a 23-5 record. Alex Trentman went on to play college ball at Christian Brothers while Drew Burns played at Centre.

2015-16

The 2015-16 Mustangs, comprised of the nucleus of Jacob Zai, Joey Hickman, Justin Rolf, John Ridder, Logan Schultz and Jackson Crawford made for some exciting basketball. They served notice by defeating a good Newport team in the second game of the season in Newport. They swept the Greenup County Holiday Tournament and handed Campbell County a loss in the Crosstown Classic, and went on to win the 10th Region “A” Tournament over a heavily favored Paris Greyhounds five. A tough draw of Murray in the “A” State sent the Mustangs home early, despite giving the Tigers anxious moments in a low-scoring affair. The ’16s proved to be further snake-bit, blowing out Mason County at home on senior night, only to fail in three chances, one of which was a coin toss, to hurdle Scott and make it to the Regional Tournament, where the Royals cut down the nets and went to Rupp, while the Mustangs were left on the outside, looking in. They finished with a 19-8 record but will forever wonder – What if ???

2016-17

The 2016-17 Mustangs came up young, and for the first time in 24 years failed to record a non-losing season. They would lose only two seniors to graduation and return players who would become household names over the next few seasons – J.D. Schumacher, Allen Jump, Tyler MacDonald, Ethan Eilerman and 2017-18 seniors Austin Schirmer, Bryce Donnelly and Zach Hamberg. That team began a new winning seasons streak, recording a 15-12 season, to be followed by a 19-11 campaign in 2018-19. This team won the 10th Region “A” Tournament for the first time since 2016, and battled the “A” State Champion University Heights Blazers to the wire in a 61-53 thriller, and took the Campbell County Camels to the final seconds in yet another 63-59 near-miss. J.D. Schumacher finished his career with 905 points, and Junior Ethan Eilerman promised a run for 1,000 points in the upcoming 2019-20 campaign.

2018-19

The 2018-19 Brossart Mustangs rebounded with a 19-11 record. Deprived a 20-wins season only by late season defections and weather cancellations. This team improved steadily throughout the season. Ethan Eilerman hit a 3-pointer ahead of the buzzer to defeat Holmes at home in overtime. We drew eventual “A” State Champ and their Xavier signee, Ky Ky Tandy in the opening round of the 2019 “A” State Tournament, giving the Blazers their best game of the tournament in a 61-53 loss. We than got the best of NCC, 73-56 as J.D. Schumacher provided the exclamation point with a slam dunk. A head-scratching loss to Calvary Christian seemed to invigorate us as we headed into district tournament play. blowing out Mason County 75-47 on their senior night in Maysville. Campbell County was a huge favorite coming into the 37th District Tournament, but our Mustangs gave the eventual 10th Region Champs all they wanted and it took all of Reid Jolly’s 37 points to hold us off, 63-59. J.D. Schumacher finished out his career with 905 points.

2019-20

The 2019-20 Mustangs had a banner season, posting a 25-7 record, defeating Campbell County in the Crosstwon Classic, repeated in the 10th Region “A” Classic, and returned to the 10th Region Tournament for the first time since 2014, where we defeated Robertson County in an overtime event made possible by an Ethan Eilerman three-pointer just ahead of the buzzer in regulation play. It was a season that saw Ethan Eilerman record his 1,000th point, and finished his career with 1,338 points, fourth best in school history, and Mike Code record his 300th career varsity win – all here at Brossart High School. Mike was also named the 10th Regon KABC Coach of he Year. Eilerman was named to the 10th Region – All Region – First Team, and Stephen Verst and Carson Schirmer were honorable mention.
