Ben Franzen Era Tips Off With 80-44 Win Over Villa Madonna

BROSSART SENIOR JACK POE TO UNDERGO KNEE SURGERY, LIKELY OUT FOR THE SEASON

The 2022-23 Season got underway Monday night with our Mustangs blitzing the homestanding Villa Vikings early, blowing out to a 24-6 first quarter lead, and then extending the margin to 56-10 at the half, enroute to an 80-44 opening night victory.  Logan Woosley led a balanced scoring attack with 23 points on a night when five Mustangs put up double-figues. Villa’s Junior Henry Thole caught fire in the second half and led all scorers with 28 points.  It was revealed earlier in the day that a knee ailment that has plagued Senior Jack Poe for the past two weeks would require surgery, and will likely end his career.

Our Junior Varsity team was much the best in a lopsided 57-15 win over the JV Vikings.  Sophomore Parker Mulberry and Dom Hadden combined for 35 points.  Mulberry then came back in the varsity game to begin pursuit of the Mustangs’ 1,000 Points Club by scoring 7 points in the feature event.

Our Mustangs will be back in action Wednesday when we host the Newport Wildcats in the Sydome, with JV and Varsity games tipping off at 6pm and 7:30pm.

Pregame Report

Our Mustangs hope to get out of the gate running Monday night when we look to take a trip over the track versus the Division III Villa Madonna Vikings in Villa Hills. Our guys defeated Villa 60-37 a year ago in Alexandria, and own the series 6-0.  These Seniors, featured by John Ridder over the past week here on the site, were thrust into varsity competition a year ago, with only one Senior, David Govan, on the roster.  It is our hope that the experience, where we dropped eight games within four points, will benefit us during their own senior season.  That, and a steady diet of skills sessions and serious Strength/Fitness Training sessions should all work in our favor, moving forward. Coach Ben Franzen comes to us after successful stints as an assistant at Highlands and most recently, Covington Catholic, serving under Coach Scott Ruthsatz.  He has devised a system that befits our size and stature, demonstrated on Green and White Night, and in our pre-season scrimmages. We will know a whole lot more about this team next week at this time, as we will face Villa on Monday, host Top Ten, Newport, on Wednesday, travel to Holmes Thursday and finish out the week at Ludlow on Saturday with a tripleheader. All of our varsity games are broadcast live via this website on the Meridix “Brossart Broadcast Network.”
