Header by Sophomore defender Carter Goodman, the lone goal of the night as the Mustangs beat the Camels 1-0.
It may not have been the prettiest win that the Mustangs had this year, but a “win’s a win” and they brought home the 37th District trophy and claim the title of repeat champs. Sometimes when you’re not having your best game, mainly due to multiple injuries, it takes true grit to hang on to your lead and fight until the end. That’s just what this team did on Thursday night against the Campbell County Camels.
If you recall, the two teams met back on September 7th, where the Mustangs were clearly the dominant team, winning 6-0. The much-improved Camels remembered that loss and used it as their motivation in an attempt to even things up. Camels Sophomore keeper Brycen Faulkner and Mustangs Junior keeper Logan Rauen made several key stops on both ends of the field, keeping the score at 0-0 until just over 9 minutes to play in the first half.
A Tyler Smith shot was deflected over the end line by Faulkner, setting up a corner kick right in front of the BBHS student section. Smith sent a bullet into the box, while Sophomore defender Carter Goodman positioned himself between defenders, allowing him to slip a header passed Faulkner. Goodman would leave the game on the next play after rolling an ankle while defending a Blake Foster run.
Our NFHS camera captured the winning goal:
Senior Team Captain Ty Schaeffer, along with Seniors David Prather, Ryan Ebert and James Ampfer made several key stops, holding the Camels to only a handful of shots. Goalkeepers Logan Rauen and Michael Cooney turned in a clean sheet again. Cooney replaced Rauen after he left the game following a controversial collision with a Camel striker while attempting to make a save in the second half.
The Lady ‘Stangs and Lady Camels also played their Finals match on Thursday night. The game was postponed multiple times after multiple lighting delays during halftime, where the score was 1-0. Play finally resumed and the final was 2-0 Lady Camels.
Both teams advance and will play next week. The boys will be at Harrison County, while the girls will play at CCHS. Teams will be drawn and seeded on Saturday morning. As soon as the game time and ticket information is available, we will update the site.
A special thanks to Trainer Ashley Vater, for taking care of our teams during and after the games, not to mention all season long!
