The Bishop Brossart bass team participated in the first High School fishing tournament of the year this past Saturday March 22, at Lake Cumberland. A total of 189 boats from schools across the state participated.
Upon arrival at Lake Cumberland the team was greeted with a flooded, muddy, debris filled, windy, and cold lake that would prove to make fishing tough. The anglers worked hard all day and were rewarded with 3 of our 5 boats catching keeper bass to weigh in at the end of the day.
The top Brossart boat was Lincoln Schabell and Carter Vogel, who weighed in two fish for a total of 4lbs 9oz, finishing in 31st place overall. Right behind them, Shane Willike and Derek Bezold weighed in two fish for 3lbs 13oz, placing 35th. Brendan Hill and Anderson Keller brought in a very nice smallmouth weighing 2lbs 10oz, securing 62nd place.
Carson Schultz and John Prather did well during practice fishing on Friday and put a fish or two in the boat during the tournament, unfortunately they did not have any keeper fish on this day.
The boat with Beckett Meersman and Levi Snowball had good luck during practice fishing but also came up a little short on tournament day.
Getting 10 students transported, fed, equipped with rods reels and tackle and in boats at Lake Cumberland is no small task and requires a dedicated group of parents and supporters. The team is led by Captain Doug Lackey with boat captains Barry Prather, Spencer Hackworth, Dan Bertram, and Andy Schabell. Special thanks to Andy Smith and Tom Holtz for letting us use their boats for the tournament and Tracy Schultz for shopping for the food.
