KHSAA Board of Control Amends Post-Season Playoff Format, Considers “One Free Transfer”

The More Things Change The More They Stay The Same - KHSAA Accepts Board of Control Recommendation To Play Outside District First Round Opponents

The KHSAA today (Thurs. 2-17-22) accepted the Recommendation of the Board of Control, to revamp the 2022 Post-Season Playoff structure.

For the past three years teams played those from within their own districts, with that district’s champion advancing to regional competition between themselves and the winner of their “Sister District” – in our case that is District Six.

District Six is comprised of:  Betsy Layne, Fairview, Paintsville, and Raceland.

This is the format that was in effect in our early years of Brossart Football.  Recently, under the intra-district play format we lost to Nicholas County in 2019, forfeited to Nicholas County in 2020, and defeated Nicholas County to win the District Title and move on to face Raceland, the champions of District Six in the Regional Finals.

Under the new format by seed, we will play the members of District Six in an eight team playoff to determine the Regional Champion.  Beyond that play will be determined by RPI.  Our Regular Season results with Paris, Bracken County, and Nicholas County will determine the District Champion.

In chatting with Coach Wiggins Thursday evening via text, he stated that our post-season opponent could possibly be determined on a rotational basis.

What is for sure, is that we will no longer play teams from our own district in the first round of playoffs.

Also being considered, but not implemented by the KHSAA is adopting a “One Free Transfer” plan, where any player from any team could transfer to another team with no questions asked one time.  Ongoing transfers would be subject to KHSAA review.
