“Live and direct…” Dave Schabell Returns To The Air

After an unexpected 25-day hiatus, it’s going to be great to once again hear, “Live and direct from the Thomas H. Seither Sports Center here on the campus of Bishop Brossart High School on the Avenue of Champions… in Alexandria, Kentucky!” from our very own Dave Schabell.

To bring everyone up to speed, Schabs completed his last broadcast on December 9, 2023. Just two days later, he suffered a serious knee injury after stepping off a curb in front of the post office, severing his patellar tendon. He underwent successful surgery just days later, followed by extensive rehab and physical therapy at The Seasons.

Dave returned home on Saturday, December 30, and has been steadily working his way back toward the broadcast booth ever since.

I’ll admit, when he told me on December 21st that he had his sights set on returning to the microphone on January 3rd, I raised an eyebrow. Truthfully, that would’ve been my reaction to anyone setting such an ambitious goal under those circumstances. But if there’s one thing we all know about Schabs, it’s that he’s the definition of dedication — and tonight, he’s planning to prove it.

Schabs does so much for the Bishop Brossart community and has long been a fixture in Mustang athletics. Through this website he launched in 2001, he has highlighted countless achievements, stories, and updates surrounding BBHS athletics. Today, however, it’s only fitting that we take a moment to recognize his own accomplishments and unwavering dedication to our school and community.

During his tenure, the 1965 Brossart graduate has served as head coach of eleven Mustang freshman teams. He also spent five seasons as the Varsity Girls Head Coach from 1986-1991, where his Lady ’Stangs compiled an impressive 99-45 record. That stretch included a remarkable 26-6 campaign in 1986-87 that ended in the 9th Region Semi-Finals after capturing the school’s first-ever District Championship. Dave has served under nine Mustang head coaches dating back to Jon Quatman, who first hired him in 1978.

Today, Schabs continues to wear countless hats within the program. He serves as the program’s business manager, oversees publicity, manages the bmustangs.com website, coordinates fundraising efforts, anchors the Meridix webcast team, edits the program’s media guide, and acts as traveling secretary when the Mustangs hit the road.

His impact has been recognized throughout Northern Kentucky and beyond. Schabell was elected to the 10th Region Hall of Fame in the spring of 2009, inducted into the Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Association Hall of Fame in October 2009, and later that same year into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. In March 2016, he was inducted into the Bishop Brossart High School Athletics Hall of Fame. He added another honor in 2019 when he was elected to the Northern Kentucky Coaches Association Court of Honor, followed by induction into the NKBBCA Court of Distinction in March 2022. Dave turned 78 in June of 2025, but he’s still going strong.

In 2022, the Munninghoff Family honored Schabs by naming the drive leading into the MAC after him, recognizing his countless years of service and dedication to Bishop Brossart and the surrounding community.

We continue to wish him the very best in his recovery and rehabilitation process, and we know it won’t be long before Schabs is right back where he belongs — doing what he loves and supporting Mustang athletics.
