WIN 14TH GAME OF THE SEASON, DEFEAT CLAY COUNTY 52-38 BEHIND 25 POINTS FROM FRESHMAN DREW STEFFEN, INCLUDING FIVE 3-POINTERS

Our All-Freshman-Sophomore Junior Varsity Team Posted their 13th victory of the season with a 37-30 Win Over Mason County in the Fieldhouse

Brossart JV Coach Derrick McBride came to Maysville Thursday night  with only seven players, that included three freshmen available to him.  As a result of an injury sustained in the Boone County JV game Tuesday night, Sophomore Karter Morgan has been lost to the team for the remainder of the season with a broken wrist.   Playing his seven man rotation, we outplayed  the Royals 27-12 after two quarters of play.  While the Royals played the second half with renewed vigor, we had built up enough of a lead to prevail 37-30 and win our 13th game of the season (13-8), with five JV games yet to be played. Brady Boruske led the Mustangs with 12 points and Carson Hesse added 9.

This team’s 13 wins equals the number of Ws accrued by the 2016-17 team’s like number of victories.  The last time a Brossart JV team exceeded 13 wins was back in 2014-15 when a team who labeled themselves “Bad Boys” and included Joey Hickman, Jacob Zai, and their ringleader, Justin Rolf, won the NKAC Division II Conference race by going 7-1 en-route to a 16-3 season mark.  Digging deeper, the Alex Trentman/Drew Burns/Erik Rieger/Jake Jennings led 2011-12 JVs were also 16-3, and the 2005-06 JVs sported a 17-7 mark.  The finest JV team record in the history of St. Mary/Brossart basketball was the undefeated 2004-05 group who went 23-0, won the District and Conference Titles, and were tabbed the top JV team in Northern Kentucky when they defeated Covington Catholic in overtime in Park Hills that season.  This team would go on to be the precursor of the 2006-07 varsity team that recorded a 28-5 season mark and  would win the All “A” State Championship.

While our non-Senior varsity team continues to struggle this year, it is somewhat scary to think of how good this year’s JV team might be with a full complement of seniors filling out our varsity roster, and would allow Ben Doyle, Beckett Kuntz, Brady Boruske and others to be full-fledged JV team players.  Right now, however, we will relish the fact that in the midst of a tough varsity campaign, there is this bright light at the end of the 2023-24 tunnel, paving the way for future success.
