Mustangs Go Down Fighting! Match Royals With 9 Three-Pointers. Trailed 63-56 With Under A Minute. Win 15 Games This Season.
Had you sat in on practice the past week, you would have known that our game plan was to defend from the rim out, and limit “Paint Points”, having had 46 of them scored against us back on February 17th in the SyDome. Mission accomplished! We allowed only 10 points in the paint for the first three quarters, and it was only when we were forced to come out on them when trailing late, that the Royals got it inside effectively. Our second goal was to limit the production of Sophomore Braeden Myrick, who did score 21, but he’s pretty good. What we were willing to give up was point production from support players, who were only able to generate 9 points collectively. We knew there was also a risk of them hitting an inordinate number of three-pointers. They hit 9 of them, but so did we. The bottom line is their top three players contributed 57, while our top three scorers totaled 41. It was a good game plan.
We laid a 5-0 early game deficit on the Royals who responded with a 7-0 run of their own. They doubled it up on us at 12-6 causing us a few anxious moments, but by the end of the quarter Carson Hesse had come off of the bench, scored 8 points, and we had closed the gap to 17-16 and it was Game On. The second quarter was a low scoring affair, however we managed to lead 25-23 at the two minute mark, when the Royals scored 7 points on two plays, both three-pointers, one of which was a four-point play, giving them a 5 point lead, 30-25, and momentum at halftime. Both teams managed 11 points in the third quarter with the Royals on top 41-36. Several times: 45-42, 47-44, 52-47, and 65-59 we put pressure on the Royals before the clock struck midnight for our Mustangs at 67-59, closing the book on the 2024-25 Season with a 15-16 record, and a few wins out there which somehow escaped our win column. We were led by Parker Mulberry with 17 points. Beckett Kuntz added 11, while Carson Hesse added 13 and was named to the 10th Region Tournament, All-Tournament Team. Thanks to all of my broadcast partners this season – Dave Trentman, Rob Neltner, and Dustin Mulberry on the boys side, and Dan Schultz and John Reinecke on the girls broadcasts.
We are the 10th Region “A” Champs and the 37th District Runners-up, and our coach has been named the “Class “A” Coach of the Year” for the second time in his three year tenure. He finishes in 36th place all time among St. Mary/Bishop Brossart Career Scorers with 781 points, moving past Jackson Crawford (778) Monday night in his final game.

The Campbell County Camels had no problem winning their 12th consecutive 37th District Championship, handing our Mustangs a 81-39 loss, pretty much dominating from the opening tip, running out to a 19-6 first period lead and never looking back. The Camels put 11 players in the scoring column, led by Garyn Jackson, who had a field night, putting up 26 points. Their other double-figure scorers were Xavier Fancher with 13, and Lucas Anthrop 10. The Camels, (22-9) manufactured quarter scores of 19, 20, 26, and 16. In the meantime we would counter with 6, 10, 14, and 9.
Parker Mulberry led the Mustangs (15-15) with 12, including his 69th and 70th 3-pointers of the season. His 12 points gives him a career total of 764 points, bypassing Ralph Kroger and Craig Bertsch on the All-Time St. Mary/Bishop Brossart scorers list. Named to the All-Tournament Team were Parker Mulberry and Carson Hesse from Brossart, and Austin Davie, Xavier Fancher, and Garyn Jackson for the Camels.
In other District Finals played on Thursday night, Mason County defeated Augusta and Montgomery County knocked off George Rogers Clark. Harrison County and Nicholas County will vie for the 38th District title Friday night. So at this point Brossart could conceivably draw Mason County or Montgomery County, or the winner of the 38th District which would be our preferred draw. The actual draw meeting will take place Saturday morning at Harrison County High School.
The broadcast delay at the top of the broadcast, was unfortunately self-inflicted as I failed to follow my normal startup sequence. The complete broadcast replay is presently available through the normal channels.
Mustangs Win!!! Defeat Scott 48-37, Move on to the Thursday Night 7:30pm Championship Game Versus Campbell County and to the 10th Region Tournament
Mustangs 48, Scott 37
37th District Semi-Finals
Tuesday, February 25th
After a rather gentlemanly first quarter that saw Scott take a 14-11 lead, the intensity of the game increased dramatically with both teams challenging each other at every opportunity to engage in hand to hand combat. The results were a bunch of turnovers, steals, blocked shots, held balls, a bloody nose, and and the periodic foul called. It was especially physical in the paint and each rebound was contested. While we were effected by the up-tempo defense in the first quarter, it played in our favor in the second quarter, where we outscored the home team 13-6 to take a 24-20 lead to the locker room at halftime.
Again our “get after ’em” defense, which is not exactly textbook, was again effective in limiting the Eagles to but 6 points for the second consecutive segment. Meanwhile Brossart went on a quick 7-0 run, culminated by a Parker Mulberry 3-pointer, which forced Coach Steve Frommeyer to call a time out to stop the bleeding, but it was too late. Brossart had established an eight point lead and we were never seriously threatened for the duration of the game. With the win we advance to Thursday night’s 37th District Championship Game versus Campbell County at 7:30pm.
