Mustangs Downed 55-52 By Ludlow, Despite Career High 22 Points From Junior Logan Woosley

Dave Schabell December 4, 2021 2:39 am

Ludlow Bids To Become 10th Region Champs, Defeating Pendleton County on Tuesday and then taking down our Mustangs three days later.

Friday, December 3rd

Varsity Game Broadcast Replay

Our Mustang JVs exercised a little offensive muscle in the prelim game, rolling to a 45-22 win over the homestanding JV Ludlow Panthers.

Nine Mustangs, led by the Freshman Domyniq Hadden led the attack with 12 points.  Luke Schumacher added 10, and another Freshman, Keegan Gulley tacked on 7, as nine of our players dressed put ink in the scorebook.  With the win the Mustangs JV team improves to 2-1 on the young season.  All three of our teams travel to Pendleton County Monday night for 4pm, 6pm, and 7:30pm contests vs Sam Elsberd’s Wildcats.

Freshman Domyniq Hadden, plying in only his third JV game led the Mustangs JVs with 12 points.
Junior Logan Weesley scores a career high 22 points in the losing varsity effort.

Luke Schumacher’s 14 points scored in this game was also a career high.

Our Mustangs, feeling their way through the early section of our schedule, played in hard luck, some of which was self-inflicted, Friday night in a game of momentum swings that saw the Ludlow Panthers have the last one, connecting on a plus-NBA 3-pointer by Aaron Brown, holding off our guys 55-52, despite a career high 22 point effort from Junior Logan Woosley.

We nailed three first-quarter 3-pointers and led the Panthers 14-12 after a period of play.  Things didn’t go well for us in the second stanza, as we mustered only a single field goal, and three free-throws, allowing the Panthers, who put 10 on the board to take a 22-19 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The two teams slugged it out in the third quarter with Ludlow one point upping us, to establish a 34-30 lead with only 8 minutes remaining in the game.  It was then that things got interesting.  Logan Woosley caught fire, going on an individual 8-0 run, hitting a 3-pointers and a pair of field-goals plus a free throw, giving the visitors a 38-34 lead, drawing a Dan Sullivan time-out.  It was then Ludlow’s turn to capitalize on a few Mustang turn-overs, answering with a 6-0 run and drawing a Scott Code time-out, as the home team re-took the lead at 40-38,, With just under two minutes remaining  in the game with the Mustangs trailing 45-43, Gavin Anderson hit a 3-pointer from the coffin corner and suddenly we trailed by five, which we quickly made up.  Govan scored in close and Woosley hit his fifth 3-pointer of the night, knotting the score at 48s.  It was then that Aaron Brown took what appeared to be an ill-advised extra long-range 3-point attempt, which hit nothing but net, giving his team a 51-48 advantage.  Forced to foul, Gavin Anderson hit both ends of the double-bonus with 5.0 seconds left to play.  We could only manage a desperation shot from half court which was off its mark, and the Panthers defeated our Mustangs for the first time in this century.

For the game we knocked down 7 three-pointers, five of those from Woosley, and the other two from Mason Sepate who actually struggled from beyond the arc on this night.  As a team we shot 7/27 from beyond 19’9″.range.

We also stood in and took six charges – two from Sepate, and one each Woosley, Bezold, Poe, and Orth.

We continue to struggle with maintaining possession of the ball and creating high-percentage shots, turning the ball over on 16 occasions.
