Holy Cross Sneaks Out of Town With a 6-3 District Seeding Win Over Our Mustangs
Holy Cross could only produce one "Big Play" all night, BUT it was enough. A 24 yard Quarterback keeper being the difference in 6-3 "Pitcher's Battle"
Volleyball Coach Danielle French Interview at 1:11:50
When we look back on this game, a missed Field Goal attempt that caromed off of the upright, following a successful attempt that was wiped out via flag, and then we were first and goal at the Holy Cross one yard line at the start of the second quarter, where we came up empty, and missed tackles on the Indians’ touchdown run will be the factors that will haunt the Mustangs after dropping a 6-3 district seeding decision to the Tribe.
Neither team could put points on the board in the first stanza which ended with Brossart in the shadow of the goal line, that eventually resulted in the missed Field Goal attempt, following a successful attempt that was wiped out via flag. We had hoped that this wouldn’t come back to haunt us, but it did. With 1:22 remaining in the half, and the Mustangs benefitting by a 20 yard gainer on a complete Landon Spaulding pass to Quinten Tischner, set up Max Runge for a 23 yard Field Goal, sending the Mustangs to the locker room at halftime with a 3-0 lead and anticipating having the ball to start the second half.
The third quarter shows that we were in possession of the ball on four occasions, where we punted on three of them and were intercepted on another to not add to our three point sum total. The Indians fumbled the ball away to Quinten Tischner, punted, and drove 51 yards, culminating with a 24 yard keeper by Quarterback Brian Ferguson who eluded multiple potential tacklers, resulting in the only touchdown of the game. When the PAT attempt was no good, the Tribe led for the first time on this night 6-3, with our guys failing to answer in the finale, falling 6-3 in this pitcher’s battle which snapped a six game Brossart win streak over the visitors. who improve to 7-0 on the season. The Indians are well aware that they joined the Sayre Spartans in dodging a bullet in Alexandria. For their offensive and defensive efforts on our behalf Quinten Tischner and Matthew Goering were named the respective Players of the Game. Here ae some individual numbers from the game – Rushing Schuck 19 carries – 17 yards, Spaulding 6 carries – 14 yards. Passing Spaulding 12 attempts – 5 completions – 40 yards. Receiving Ruth 1- 15 yards, Amin 3 – 13 yards, Tischner 1-20 yards. Punts – Runge 4 – 119 yards – Average 29.8 yards per punt.
We will be on the road for our two remaining district seeding contests – at Ludlow, and at Trimble County in Bedford, Ky., on the next two Friday nights. Our lone remaining regular season home game comes on Thursday night, October 30th versus Pendleton County in the “Battle of US27.”
