Our JV team lined up against much of the same players who would suit up in the varsity game later in the evening.   After playing to a 4-4 stalemate after six minutes of action, Newport’s 6’6″ blue-chip 8th grader James Turner took over, putting 12 of his game high 17 points on the board, propelling his team to a 23-11 lead and never looked back.  Hard working footballer Luke Piscitello led the Mustangs with 9 points and Luke Schumacher added 8, as the two combined for 17 of our team’s 24 total points.

Junior Luke Piscitello, fresh off of the gridiron where he performs our kick-off duties, was the leading scorer in the JV game with 9 points.

The Newport Wildcat fans turned out in force on Wednesday night at Stan Arnzen Gymnasium, as a stable full of young talent suited up on Opening Night and didn’t disappoint their faithful.

In a quarter of runs, Newport had the first one as Senior Evan Snapp nailed a pair of two point goals and a 3 ball, giving the home team a 7-0 lead.  Not to be outdone, the Mustangs answered with a 6-0 burst dashing the Wildcats’ fans hope for an early game blow out.  A pair of 3-pointers, one by 8th Grader Taylen Kinney and the other by Ethan Jefferson, then propelled the Cats to a 13-9 advantage after a period of play.

Our defense in the second quarter was much more Mustang-like, as we limited the Cats to merely 5 points in the period. This allowed our guys to cut the Newport lead to 3 at 18-15 in a low scoring half, at the break.

Momentum crept into a Newport uniform in the third period, as 8th Grader, Taylen Kinney nailed a pair of 3s, and Evan Snapp added another, to outscore the visitors 18-8, giving the Cats a 36-23 lead with a quarter to play.  We outscored the Cats 13-12 in the fourth stanza making the final  score 48-36, handing our guys our first loss and first conference loss of the young season.

On the night we were paced by Junior Mason Sepate with 13 points and David Govan put up 11.  Newport were led by the prolific 8th Grader, Taylen Kinney with 15 points, including three 3s..  Veteran Evan Snapp, Coach Rod Snapp’s son knocked home a pair of 3s on the night to put 10 points on the board.  The Cats nailed a total of 7 long-range bombs on the night.
