Mustangs Secure Top Seed In District With Win Over Scott, 3-1

Andy Goodman September 17, 2021 11:24 am
A pair of goals by Senior Andrew Beck and another by Sophomore Brennen Callahan prove to be too much for Scott High School

The Mustangs extend their win streak to 7 and post a clean sweep of the 37th District, after defeating the Scott Eagles by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday night.  The game was physical and several of our offensive runs were called back by a few controversial calls.

Senior Tyler Twehues was a busy man, serving up three of his teammates throughout the night.  The first was a nice assist to Senior Andrew Beck at the 35 min mark, putting the Mustangs up 1-0.  Although the momentum seemed to be in the Eagle’s favor midway through the first half, the Mustangs retained the 1-0 lead at halftime.

8 minutes into the second half, Tyler Twehues took a shot from the left side of the field.  It ricocheted off of the Eagles goalie, only to find the foot of Sophomore Brennan Callahan…who scored his 4th goal of the season, putting the Mustangs up 2-0.

The Eagles avoided the shutout after scoring on a penalty kick following a Mustang foul that occurred just inside the box.  It just slipped by the finger tips of Junior Logan Rauen, who saved multiple shot attempts throughout the night in his first Varsity complete game.

Tyler Twehues continued his generous play by crossing another ball to the middle of the field, finding Andrew Beck once again and put the Mustangs up 3-1 with just over one minute to play.

With this win, the boys have locked the top seed in the District.  More details are on the way.

The Mustangs take on the Tigers of Beechwood at the MAC this Saturday @12noon, to determine the 9th/10th Sectional winner.  A win Saturday will send the Mustangs to the All “A” State Tournament the weekend of September 25th and 26th.

The Freshman and JV squads also put on a show.  Freshman boys beat Scott 3-2 with two goals from Freshman Andrew Lusby (both assisted by Freshman Alex Runge) and a game winner…with just 5 seconds left in the game…for 8th grader Luke D’Alessandro. JV defeated Scott 3-0, with Sophomore Goalkeeper Michael Cooney posting a clean sheet. Sophomore Alexander Duffy nets his first two high school goals and Freshman Alex Runge sent a 3rd into the back of net.

Come watch the JV team compete in the JV Invitational tonight (9/17) @ 8:00pm.  The game will be played at Town & Country. Adults: $5, Students and Senior Citizens: $2.
