As I had suspected, our two scrimmage opponents were superior football teams. Bracken County defeated Harrison County 42-0, and Sayre shut out Holy Cross 49-0 on opening night.
The first quarter of our game was played between the 30s as neither team was able to move the ball effectively, and it looked like this one might be a “pitcher’s battle.” Not to be however, as Tyler Holtz connected on a pair of touchdown passes, the first a 3 yard toss to Anthony Schuck, and the second a completion to Cam Mandel from 9 yard out, giving the Mustangs a 14-0 lead, as Max Runge was perfect on the night, going 4 of 4 on PATs . The Mustangs who won the toss and deferred to the second half, led 14-0 at halftime and had the ball to start the second half.
In the third quarter it would be Holtz again, who found Isaac Amin from 30 yards out, making the score 21-0 following the Runge extra-point. In the final stanza, Runge connected on a 25 yard Field Goal, making it 24-0 when Brossart, deep in our own territory at the 20 yard line, had our ball carrier stripped by 305 pound sophomore, Gavin Gaines, setting up a 10 yard trophy run by the Bearcat quarterback, Trace Dalton, closing the gap to 24-6. Holtz closed out the scoring two minutes later, finding Landon Ruth wide open up the sideline for a 49 yard score, making the final score 31-6 following the Max Runge tack-on.
Runge was outstanding, hitting all four PAT attempts and a 25 yard Field Goal. He consistently sent the ball inside the 10 yard line on kick-offs and knocked two of them through the endzone for touchbacks. While there were many worthy candidates for Defensive Player of the Game, Joe Schroeder was selected for his efforts in the pivotal first half when the game was still a game.
Our Mustangs will travel across the river next Friday night to North College Hill where we will take on the homestanding Spartans in a 7pm contest.
