Sayre Upsets Mustangs In Week 2 With 38 Seconds Left On The Clock

Sayre 8, Mustangs 5

Defending State Champs, Sayre, finds a way to win after the Mustangs controlled 98% of the game.

Former Brossart Basketball Head Coach, Willie Schlarman once said that “It’s Not about Deserving”.  However, if there was ever a team that deserved to win tonight it was these Brossart Mustangs who held the Sayre Spartans scoreless for 47 minutes and 22 seconds of this 48 minute ball game.

After a scoreless first half, that saw Sayre miss on a 33 yard field goal that hit the upright, beginning the second half we were able to move the football from our own 17 yard line to the Sayre 10 yard but came up empty as the threat stalled out, leaving some valuable points on the field. At the 3:39 mark, Landon Ketron (Updated) would force a Safety, giving the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. We went on another drive to start the fourth quarter, marching the piggy 67 yards which culminated with a 20 yard Max Runge Field Goal, upping the score to 5-0. We were unable to finish out the contest despite turning them over on downs and then intercepting a Spartan pass (Boruske) with 2:42 remaining. We followed with a three and out forcing us to yield possession to the Spartans who took advantage, came up with a patented “Big Play” moving the ball from their own 29 to the Brossart 11 when Gage Pennington found Paul Miller for the go-ahead touchdown that took the air out of the capacity crowd who anticipated a Mustang victory over a quality opponent. However, it was not to be, and as they said, “Good Teams Find Ways To Win.”This was another night where any number of players could have been named Players of the Game, but Brady Boruske was a unanimous Defensive choice and Nick Cozzi made so many big catches, that he takes down the offensive Player of the Game.

We will look to get back on the winning side of .500 next Friday when we take on the fledgling St. Henry Crusaders on Donaldson Road at 7pm in Erlanger.
