Mustangs take on 2A Newport Friday, August 27th at Newport stadium at 7pm
Our Mustangs, coming off of a dominant performance, defeating Dayton 28-0 a week ago in Alexandria, take a step up in class, playing 2A Newport Friday night at Newport Stadium. The Wildcats dropped their first game of the season a week ago, falling to visiting Mason County 16-7 in a game marred with penalties and turnovers.
The Cats are pretty much the same team we faced in Alexandria a year ago, less their quarterback, Daniel Valeska, who was one of seven seniors who have graduated. This year’s quarterback Ethan Jefferson was 9 of 21 through the air for 111 yards, one touchdown and was picked off on three occasions versus Mason County.
In a contrast of styles, Brossart quarterback Jacob Leicht was 1 of 4 in the passing department for 7 yards, choosing to utilize the Mustangs ground game where we gained 251 yards, with Leicht himself, recording all four of our touchdowns. While the Wildcats were penalized for over 100 yards and turned the ball over on 4 occasions, the Mustangs were penalized minimally and did not turn the ball over.
Whether our 28-0 win over Dayton speaks more about us, or more about them, Jesse Herbst’s Greendevils were well-regarded before testing our Mustangs last week. Sayre, who we scrimmaged to a 14-9 disadvantage two weeks back in Alexandria, currently holds down the Number 10 spot in Class 1A rankings
NOTE: The Brossart – Bellevue football game originally scheduled for next Friday night, September 3rd has been moved to Thursday night at 7pm at Gilligan Stadium in Bellevue.
