164th Alexandria Fair Kicks Off With Wednesday Evening Parade

Crowds still line Washington Avenue and the fair route, kicking off 164th Alexandria Fair and Horse show

The City of Alexandria, the environment that we live in, throws back to our roots on an annual basis, with the Labor Day weekend renewal of the Alexandria Fair.

Our city’s motto is “Where the city meet the country”, and nowhere does the division of the new blood city dwellers and the agricultural, rural segment of our community come to the forefront than during “fair season.”..

It is doubtful that  the Arcadia community enters there fruits and vegetables, nor shows their cattle, nor flock to the Horse Show, but for many of us who have attended the fair for a large number of its 164 years, take in the horse show, have dinner in the Dining Hall, and eat a funnel cake, the fair is a rite of fall and the end of another summer.

The Alexandria Fair kicked off on Wednesday with the annual Alexandria Fair Parade – a collection of emergency vehicles, politicians, businesses, dance troupes, our high school, tractors, and a smattering of horses, and horse-drawn wagons.

District Feeder School, Sts. Peter and Paul, was also represented in the Wednesday night Fair kickoff.

My nephew, Andy Schabell, the Mayor, and the Alexandria City Council were in evidence.

Our “Brossart Connection” candidate for Kentucky State Senate, Shelley Funke Frommeyer, her family and friends were out working the crowd.

Longtime Alexandrria Fair exhibitor Jim Kuper, who has shown horses for the best part of half of a century didn’t have the most fancy rig in the parade, but the parade and the fair probably means more to Jim than any of the rest of us.  Jim can be found roaming the Fairgrounds over the weekend.

The Alexandria Fair opened Wednesday evening and will continue Thursday and Friday beginning at 3:30pm, with a Horse Show at 7:30pm Friday evening.  Gates open at 7am on Saturday, Sunday at 9:30am, and Monday (Labor Day) at 8:00am.  Horse Shows continue Saturday and Sunday at 7:30pm and 6:30pm on Monday night.                            All-Inclusive Admission is $10
