Broadcast Replay

Vince Nerone shown with some of the players who were freshmen his final year on the Brossart staff.

Much as things went sideways in the opening minutes of the Newport game earlier this season, so too would history repeat itself at the Sharp Middle School on Friday night.  The Mustangs kicked off to Pendleton County, who picked up a first down before being forced to  kicked it away to our Mustangs who took possession at our own 23 yard line.  It was a bad sign when we were whistled for illegal procedure before making our first snap of the game.  An ensuing mishandled snap on our first attempt from scrimmage saw Jacob Leicht be sacked inside the five yard line, and eventually Mason Meyer was called upon to punt from the end zone.  The resultant punt awarded the Wildcats possession at the Brossart 35 yard line.  The Cats made an early game statement, negotiating the 35 yards and added a two-point conversion.  Suddenly we trailed 8-0.

Funny (Maybe Sad) story abut the Wiggins interview – probably my worse ever.  I grabbed my interview card from my travel case and headed out to mid-field to talk to Paul, only to start the recording and realize that it was the interview card from the Nicholas County game.  Don’t get old!!!

When Jacob Leicht scored his 13th Touchdown of the season, and 27th of his career, he surpassed Trevor Schadler who had previously held the “Most Rushing Touchdowns in a Career” mark with 26.  He needs one more to tie Trevor for Most Rushing Touchdowns in a season, and he is presently in Second Place All-Time Most Yards Rushing with 2,120 (Revised).  Jacob Elbert’s 2,796.career yards rushing record appears safe.

Jacob is also the School Record Holder for Most 2 Point Conversions in a career with 9.

Jed Martin crossed the 1,000 yards rushing plateau Friday night with 110 yards, giving him 1,047 on the season, and he closes to within 76 yards of surpassing the school record of 1,123 yards in a season, currently held by Jacob Elbert.

Our team with the Battle of US27 trophy and our trainer, Ashley Vater, who was serving in that capacity for the final time in the Pendleton County game Friday night.

Our second offensive series was much more productive as Jacob Leicht marched his team 67 yards for a touchdown.  The scoring play was a 4 yard plunge by David Govan, and when Leicht negotiated a 6 1/2 yard two-point conversion, we were all tied up at 8s, which would be the score at halftime.

Pendleton County kicked off to the Mustangs to start the second half, and Leicht once again orchestrated a 68 yard drive that would see Jed Martin carry the piggy 22 yards for our go-ahead touchdown.  Again, Jacob Leicht converted the 2 point extra points, and for the first time in the ballgame (5:42 3rd Q) the Mustangs poked a head in front.

Midway through the fourth quarter we would strike again, making it 24 unanswered points, as Jacob Leicht became a school record holder by going 8 yards on a bootleg touchdown run, and this time it was Jed Martin who cashed in on the two-point conversion making it 24-8 and this one appeared to be headed to the record books as our tenth consecutive victory.  However, the Cats weren’t about to concede and put up another six points on the board when Jacob Redden connected with Vincent Nocero on a 30 yard passing touchdown with 1:11 remaining in the game.  When the 2 Point conversion was thwarted and Mason Meyer fell on the on-sides kick, this one went into the record books as a 24-14 Brossart victory.
