Jacob Leicht Runs For All Four Brossart Touchdowns, Thomas Sayers Named Defensive Player of the Game
The Brossart Mustangs were ready to play on opening night, routing Class 1A non-district foe, Dayton, 28-0 Friday night at the MAC.
Brossart drew first blood at the 3:53 mark of the first period when Jacob Leicht finished off a 46 yard drive with a one-yard plunge into the end-zone giving the home team a 6-0 early game advantage. The PAT was no good. We expanded the lead to 13-0 at the 6-51 of the second period when again, Leicht put six more points on the board with an 8 yard touchdown run at the 6:51 mark of the second period. Andrew “Dewey” Schwartz hit paydirt on the PAT attempt and the Mustangs now led 13-0, and we weren’t finished yet. Late in the second period Jacob Leicht orchestrated a 77 yard drive which he finished off with 1:06 remaining in the half, gaining ten hard-earned yards for his third touchdown run on the night. The Mustangs went for a two-point conversion, and called on Jed Martin, who negotiated the required three yards, giving the Mustangs a 21-0 lead at halftime.
Neither team was able to put numbers on the scoreboard in the third quarter. Jacob Leicht put the icing on the cake with 1:36 remaining in the contest, culminating a 61 yard drive with a 7 yard touchdown bootleg run, complete with a “Dewey” Schwartz PAT made the final score 28- 0, and this one went into the win column.
There were a lot of positives from a lot of players in this one. Sam Willike, a first year Junior football player, ran back a couple of punts effectively. Derek Martin made a couple of solo tackles. Evan Orth shared running back duties with Jed Martin, and had a big night with several meaningful gainers. Junior Austin Schadler made his presence known on defense with several big plays. Mason Meyer pinned the Greendevils with his only punt attempt on the night. Luke Piscitello, kicking off, did the job asked of him, limiting Dayton runbacks to settling for possession at their own 35 yard line. Senior Kaleb Lukes got his number called on several defensive plays. Thomas Sayers earned Defensive Player of the Game honors with this leadership and effectiveness on the defensive side of the ball.
On the night, Jacob Leicht was 1 of 4 through the air, for 7 yards, a pop pass to David Govan. He rushed for 95 yards on 18 carries and scored all four of our touchdowns. Jed Marin picked up 80 yards on 19 attempts, and Evan Orth gained 61 yards on 7 carries. Andrew Schwartz was 2 of 3 on PAT attempts. As a team, the Mustangs did not turn the ball over.
The Mustangs will be back in action next Friday night at 7pm at Newport Stadium, when we take on the Class 2A Newport Wildcats.
On Saturday morning, the Mustangs JVs defeated Dayton 33-6 at Davis Field in Dayton.
