Patty Goering Photos From Our Varsity Win 49-0 Over Pineville, As We Improve to 3-0

Mustangs score early and often enroute to a somewhat unexpected 49-0 win over Pineville. A year ago we played a contentious contest with the Mountain Lions in Pineville before drawing off to a 36-18 win.  On this night, after a 20 minute lightning delay, the Mustangs scored on three occasions in the first quarter, pushing out to a 22-0 early game lead.  A 25 yard pass from Keegan Gulley to Anthony Schuck put 6 points on the board at the 8:35 mark, followed by a 2-point Mandel conversion.  With 4:22 left in the period, a 4 yard Cam Mandel run made it 15-0 when Max Runge split the uprights. Tyler Holtz closed out the first quarter scoring by going on a 47 yard trophy run, plus the Runge PAT accounted for the 22-0 lead

The second quarter was more of the same seeing Keegan Gulley carry the piggy 10 yards making it 28-0.  A low snap thwarted Max Runge’s PAT effort bringing to an end his 12 PATs string.  Our final score of the half was a 95 yard interception by Cam Mandel back at the 5 yard line, setting Mandel on a course reminiscent of a route he took  a year ago in Pineville, going about an equal distance through a minefield for a touchdown, one of four he scored on that afternoon. The Mandel score and Runge PAT made it 35-0 at halftime sending the contest to a running clock.  We would score on two more occasions, a 27 yard Holtz to Nick Cozzi aerial and Runge PAT making it 42-0, and in the fourth quarter a 9 yard run by Freshman Bently McKinzie, his first high school varsity touchdown, plus a Runge PAT making the final score 49-0, and improving our season record to 3-0.  Unofficially, I show that we limited the Lions to merely 4 first downs.

Keegan Gulley (Offense) and Shane Willike (Defense) were named the Players of the Game.

Next Friday night we will host an old friend/foe – Nicholas County.  Game time is 7:30pm.
