Baseball Regular Season Wrap-up 2023

Dave Schabell May 16, 2023 8:53 am

The Brossart Mustangs 2023 Baseball Regular Season came to an end on a high note last Thursday as we no-hit the Lloyd Juggernauts 16-0 in five innings to even our record at 16-16 and on a four game win streak heading to post-season play.

Near-miss losses pepper our past-performances including a 5-4 loss at Mason County, an 8-7 photo-finish loss to Shelby County in Shelbyville.  Bracken County jumped out to a large lead an then hung on to win the 10th Region “A” title  12-8.  We limited Beechwood to but three hits, but errors proved costly in a 9-5 loss in Fort Mitchell, followed by an 8-6 setback at Covington Catholic.

Walton-Verona, the 8th Region “A” Champ and State Runner-up escaped our Mustangs 2-1 on Alumni Night in Alexandria, followed by a 5-4 loss at Dixie Heights.  In the district title seeding showdown with Campbell County, twice the Camels saw their lives pass in front of their eyes,  yet dodged our bullets to prevail 3-2.  Beating NCC 7-1 at Newport Stadium, an 11-1 runaway win over Nicholas County, an 8-6 win over Lexington Christian in Lexington,  and a late-season 8-7 walk-off win over CovCath at home were all memorable victories.  We watched Evan Moore pitch 6 and 1/3 innings of perfect baseball at Scott as we shutout our district seeding opponent 9-0, and then finished things out as Colin Combs and Brandon Bezold combined to no-hit Lloyd finishing out regular season play.   The weather probably deprived us of several wins along the way.

Senior Robbie Verst

Evan Moore, at .446, and Robbie Verst at .436 lead the team in the Batting Average category.   Verst is 41 of 94, while Moore was 37 of 83. Verst’s 41 hits led the team in the Most Hits  category.
