Our Brossart Football Mustangs Look TO Add Another First , Taking on Defending (By Default) District Champion Nicholas County, for all of the District Five Marbles
After dodging a Paris Greyhound bullet, our Mustangs are anxious to take care of some unfinished business with the Nicholas County Blue Jackets. These two teams were slated to play in this same District Championship game a year ago, when the rug was pulled from under us just 2 1/2 hours prior to kickoff, with our opponents en-route, victimized by an eleventh hour Covid precaution that mothballed their season, ended the high school careers of seven seniors, and deprived 45 perfectly healthy players and coaches a shot at winning that title and moving on in the Class 1A playoffs.
The Nicholas County Bluejackets come to town, sporting a 6-4 record of games played, and are winners of four of their last five outings. They are formidable opponents. This will be the second meeting of this season between the two teams, with our Mustangs victorious 14-0 over the Jackets back on October 1st, here at the MAC. Their recent conquests have come over Paris (17-6), Jackson County (62-12), Bracken County (38-6), and the Polar Bears again a week ago in the Class 1A, District 5 playoffs (27-0). Nicholas County has won all three District Championships since the inter-district playoff formula was enacted. Our Mustangs just missed, falling 18-13 in the 2019 District Finals in Carlisle.
While our Mustangs are 11-0, we have received challenges in our last four outings, but have been able to overcome them. Our defense will have to be able to once again limit the offensive production of the Jackets, as we did in our earlier season encounter, and will need to convert scoring opportunities to points, when those opportunities present themselves.
The Blue Jackets possess the place-kicking threat – Aurturo Alain Lopez-Dominguez, who attempted field-goals of 46 yards, 60 and 61 yards on their last visit. Lopez-Dominguez owns a 54 yard field goal this season, and has connected from over 60 yards at practice. Should we be comfortably ahead, it would be nice to see him nail one from over 60 yards. It would be fun to be on SportsCenter, and see him play on Sundays some day.
If successful, the Mustangs will face the champions of District 6, either Raceland or Paintsville in the Elite Eight. While the Raceland Rams are heavily favored in that one, we Mustangs fans need to become Paintsville fans for the night. A win by the Tigers, would bring Paintsville to the MAC on Friday, November 19th, whereas a Raceland win puts us on the bus for a trip to Worthington and a date with the Rams.
The weatherman seems to be backing off of his earlier predictions of rain and thunderstorms for Friday night, and is now leaning twoards a “chance of showers.”
Game time is 7:30pm with the live broadcast and NFHS Voice-Over beginning at 7:10pm.
Here is the complete Class 1A lineup for Friday night:
