It appeared to be business as usual as our Mustangs ran out to an 18-4 first quarter lead over the visiting Villa Madonna Vikings. Villa matched our effort in the second period as both teams put up 11 points, while the Mustangs maintained their 14 point lead at the half. Alex Combs was responsible for 9 of those points, and 7 of 8 team Free Throw shooting also contributed. Defensively, we had limited the Villa Blue-Chipper, Henry Thole to a single bucket. Again in the third period we played even up basketball, with Villa gaining a point on us, by winning the period 14-13. Brossart continued to lead 42-29 and it looked like the home team had this one salted away.
However looks can be deceiving and when Quinn Thomas scored the first 7 points in the final stanza, Villa had closed the margin to 42-36 and suddenly we had a ballgame. Twice the Vikings closed to within a single possession, but the Mustangs were up to the task, answering each challenge while hitting our free-throws. In the quarter Dom Hadden nailed 9 of 12 and the team knocked home 14 of 17 to hold the Vikings at bay, and post our opening night victory 58-53.
Dom Hadden and Alex Combs shared scoring honors for the Mustangs with 16 points each. On the night our Mustangs held a 19 points advantage from the charity stripe (26/33 to 7/15), as the new “bonus” rules met with our liking in this one. Quinn Thomas led all scorers with 20 point for the Vikings, and Henry Thole came alive for 10 points on the night. Brossart won the JV Game 67-12 with Carson Hesse leading a trio of double-figure scorers with 17 points. Drew Steffen contributed 16, and Karter Morgan 14. All seven Mustangs who dressed, scored.
