MUSTANGS SUFFER MOTHER OF ALL MURPHY’S LAW STARTS, ALLOW 20 PARIS POINTS IN FIRST THREE MINUTES- TWENTY SECONDS, PAVING THE WAY FOR THE 41-3 FINAL – TYLER SMITH CONNECTS ON A 42 YARD FIELD GOAL.
The Mustangs won the toss and elected to receive. After failing to move the football, we were forced to punt, pinning the homestanding Greyhounds back at their own 22 yard line, when the wheels came off. On their first play from scrimmage, Elijah Webb ran for a 78 Yard touchdown, followed quickly by an intercepted Keegan Gulley pass for a 7 yard Pick 6. The Hounds then recovered an onsides kick and Webb would perform an encore 65 yard trophy run, and the Mustangs found themselves in shock, looking down the barrel of a 20-0 deficit with 8:40 remaining in the opening period, before the fans were comfortable in their seats.
Sanity prevailed for the remainder of the first period and until midway through the second stanza when Tyler Smith connected on a 42 yard field goal, narrowing the Paris advantage to 17. Riley Twehues then pinned the Hounds back at their own 13 yard line with time expiring in the half. However, the home team was able to move the ball in chunks, scoring the dagger with only 19 ticks left on the clock, establishing a 27-3 lead at halftime.
Two additional punt returns for touchdowns in the third period poured salt in our wounds as the game was sent to a running clock and a final score of 41-3 favor Paris, who improves to 6-0 on the season.
District play looms ahead as Holy Cross will be our first of four consecutive district games, beginning this coming Friday night at the MAC. It is also Homecoming Night.
