Coach Sam Elsbernd, who spent the past season a varsity assistant to Ben Franzen, has been named the head coach of the Holmes Bulldogs. Sam is a 2003 graduate of Holmes. He was on staff at Holmes from 2005 through 2009, when the Bulldogs were the 9th Region Champs three times, and were State Champs in ’09. He has extensive head coaching experience, serving in that capacity at Bracken County and Pendleton County.
Sam enjoyed his stint in our program and penned a group text to our team yesterday, when he learned of getting the Holmes job. In it he described his admiration for our players and our program, and shared his expectations of us “being the turnaround story in the 10th Region in 2024-25.”
In a post on Facebook, Sam stated, “Honored. Humbled. Excited. You name it, I’m feeling it! Holmes High School and the City of Covington is a very special place to me. .I’ve been all around the world, but there is nowhere else I’d rather be than Covington, Kentucky and Holmes High School. It is a special place and I am very excited to return. “
We enjoyed having Sam as part of our season this past year. We are happy for Sam to get this opportunity at his Alma Mater and wish him nothing but the best, except on those nights when we meet in NKAC Division II competition.
